Furthermore, Ms. Tate updates probation officers for juvenile offenders in her district regarding their academic progress and daily attendance.
Ms. Tate pursued an education at Patten University before embarking upon her professional path, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in organizational management in 1995. In the years that followed, she earned a clear administrative credential and clear teaching credential from the University of California Berkeley Extension in 2003. Following this accomplishment, she continued her academic efforts at Mills College and graduated with a Master of Arts in educational leadership in 2003. Ms. Tate concluded her formal studies at Mills College in 2013, where she completed coursework in the Doctor of Education program with a focus on Educational Leadership.
Beyond her primary responsibilities, Ms. Tate has participated in numerous endeavors within her field. Outside of her immediate professional circles, she has found success as the co-creator of, and an advisory board member for, the Cornerstone Christian Academy. A respected community leader as well as a caregiver for the elderly, she has additionally held volunteer positions with the Miles Hall Foundation and the Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to her stellar tenure as an educator and administrator, Ms. Tate contributed to the Oakland Unified School District by improving their Alternative Education program, personalized online distance learning and the School-to-Career transitions for students of small autonomous schools.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Tate has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. Celebrated for garnering the Most Improved API for five years at the Dewey Academy, she was honorably recognized as the Alameda County Junior Achievement Teacher of the Year from 1996 to 1997 and the Christian Woman of the Year by Zeta Phi Beta in 2016, followed by a 2017 Classified Employee of the Year Award from the OUSD's Office of Equity as a partner in African American Male Achievement. She likewise accepted a Volunteer Award for Exceptional Service from the Career Scholarship Committee in 2013. As a testament to Ms. Tate's phenomenal talents as an educational leader, the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center was presented with a National Award for establishing the Best Juvenile Re-Entry Program in 2014.
Ms. Tate was initially drawn to her field after helping those struggling with drug addiction in her community as a volunteer, which ultimately helped inform her decision to shift her focus toward business, finance and education. Desiring to work in a discipline closer to ministry, she has attributed her success to her loving and nurturing approach to her work, which was bolstered by strong family values and her extraordinary relationships with her siblings. Proud to support and serve multiple generations of pupils over the years, she cites her influential work with students living with mental health issues and learning disabilities among the highlights of her career, in addition to her youth intervention research project at Stanford University's Impact LAB, which is known as "Lifting the Bar."
