Having accrued more than 40 years of inimitable expertise in the field of anthropological studies, Dr. Martin Shaw earned the distinguished title of a professor emerita following her retirement in 2010 from the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC). Hired in 1972 as an assistant professor while pursuing her doctorate degree, she later served as a full professor where she taught courses such as African Ethnography and African Women, Social Theory, and Sexuality. Dr. Martin Shaw also held several other positions, notably as the department chairperson of anthropology and provost of the Kresge College. She was also a member of the planning and budget committee and made significant contributions to revitalizing academic efforts in the university's colleges.
Widely known as an African American feminist, Dr. Martin Shaw dedicated her entire career to the UCSC, not only in respect to academics, but also to the campus culture. Active on the Academic Senate Committee on Privilege and Tenure, she was also Chair of the University of California systemwide-committee where she developed policies for addressing sexual harassment and other sensitive issues. Additionally, Dr. Shaw led various efforts to establish a positive environment for women on the Santa Cruz campus and for its minority populations.
During her academic career, Dr. Martin Shaw was served on panels for the National Science Foundation and the Ford Foundation, reviewing student applications for grants. Eventually, Dr. Shaw created classes and workshops for students so that they could better understand the application process.
As an anthropologist, Dr. Martin Shaw's research focused on political economy, women and gender, as well as colonial discourse. Early on, she studied kinship and social change in Kenya. Dr. Martin Shaw also explored and contributed to an understanding of race, class, gender and sexuality in the development of colonial cultures, which included numerous trips abroad to the countries of Kenya and Zimbabwe.
As a leading authority in her field, Dr. Martin Shaw has contributed two monographs. "Colonial Inscriptions: Race, Class and Sex in Kenya" was published through the University of Minnesota Press in 1995 and is based on her years of work in Kenya. "Women and Power in Zimbabwe: Promises of Feminism," which was published through the University of Illinois Press in 2015, surveyed Zimbabwean feminisms from the colonial era to recent times. In addition to her monographs, Dr. Shaw contributed chapters to several books as well as numerous scholarly articles to national and international journals.
An alumna of Michigan State University, Dr. Martin Shaw acquired a Bachelor of Arts in 1966, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in 1975. Her dissertation was notably titled as the "Kinship Morality in the Interaction Pattern of Some Kikuyu Families." To support her professional endeavors, she is a respected member of the American Anthropological Association, the Association of Feminist Anthropologists, the Association for Africanist Anthropology, the Association of Black Anthropologists, and the African Studies Association. Dr. Martin Shaw is also a former program chairperson of the Association of Black Anthropologists, served on the editorial board of several journals, and is a former board member of her local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Among her recognitions, Dr. Martin Shaw received a Danforth Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 1978, a social sciences Teaching Award in 1997, and a McHenry Award for Service to the Academic Senate in 2004 at UCSC. She also received a Fulbright Fellowship to the University of Zimbabwe between 1983 and 1984. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Martin Shaw has been cited in the 55th edition of Who's Who in America and the 21st edition of Who's Who of American Women.
