Now retired, Ms. Dawson excelled for more than 30 years in Washington working in politics. Born in Indianapolis, she initially earned an undergraduate degree at Dunbarton College of the Holy Cross in Washington in 1959. Ms. Dawson subsequently obtained a Master of Arts in international transactions at George Mason University in 1994.
As a college student, Ms. Dawson worked part time as a staffer in the Office of the Vice President (Richard Nixon) in 1959. Following graduation, she served as a staff assistant in the office of Senator Kenneth B. Keating (New York). She continued as a legislative assistant for Rep. Donald C. Bruce (Ind.) from 1961 to 1963. From 1963 to 1964 she served as the deputy director of public information for the Goldwater for President campaign and the Republican National Committee.
In 1960, she helped found Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) at the "Sharon Conference" held at the home of the late William F. Buckley Jr. in Sharon, Connecticut. She was on the board of that organization for several years and edited its publication, The New Guard. She was presented an award by Young Americans for Freedom in 1970.
She served at the newly founded American Conservative Union as Director of Public Information from 1965-1966. In 1969, serving in the White House, she wrote the President's Daily News Summary. Later, after moving to Maryland's Eastern Shore, she was a staff reporter for the Easton (Md.) Star-Democrat.
When President Reagan was elected, she was tapped to serve on the Reagan Transition Team. Afterward, she became the Deputy Press Secretary, and later Deputy Special Assistant to the Secretary of Energy. In 1984, the President nominated her as a member of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, (CPSC) an independent regulatory commission. Following confirmation by the senate, she served as a CPSC Commissioner from 1984 until 1993.
After relocating to rural Virginia, Gov. Jim Gilmore named her to the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy from 2000 to 2004. Gov. Bob McDonnell appointed her to the Virginia Racing Commission, a post she held from 2012 to 2016.
Active in state politics, Ms. Dawson chaired the Lancaster County Republican Committee, the 99th Legislative District Republican Committee, and from 2000 to 2021, was an elected member of the Virginia Republican State Central Committee, representing the First Congressional District.
She was a member of the board of governors of the Fairfax Hunt Club, (Virginia) and was instrumental in the founding of the Friends of Belle Isle State Park (FOBI) in Lancaster County.
