Following a similar path to that of his father, who was a physicist at the Dow Chemical Company and then a professor of metallurgical engineering at the University of Michigan, Philip Hanawalt has always been intrigued by science; particularly electronics, biophysics and molecular biology. He joined the faculty at Stanford University in 1961 as a researcher and lecturer in the Biophysics Graduate Program, was then promoted to Professor of Biology, and eventually to the Dr. Morris Herzstein Professorship in 2009. He was Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences from 1982 to 1989, and also served as Chair of the Second Senate ad hoc Committee on the Professoriate at Stanford 1988-'90.
Dr. Hanawalt earned a B.A. in physics at Oberlin College in 1954, an M.S. in physics at Yale University in 1955 and a Ph.D. in biophysics at Yale in 1959. He carried out postdoctoral research in bacterial physiology at the University of Copenhagen and molecular biology at the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Hanawalt was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Oberlin College in 1997, followed by the Doctor Honoris Causa from the University Bio Bio in Chile in 2006, the University of Seville in Spain in 2008, the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina in 2012, the National University of El Litoral in Argentina in 2014 and the Universidad Mayor de San Andres in La Paz, Bolivia in 2015.
Dr. Hanawalt pioneered and maintained leadership in the fields of DNA repair and genomic maintenance for over five decades. He first reported repair replication of DNA and co-discovered the ubiqutous process of excision-repair in 1963-'64. Several decades later, he and his students discovered the specialized pathway of transcription-coupled DNA repair in bacteria, yeast and mammalian cells. His research group conducted extensive research on the role of DNA damage and repair in human genetic disease and aging.
Dr. Hanawalt mentored 29 Ph.D. graduate students, over 60 postdoctoral scholars, and nearly 40 undergraduate students, of whom most graduated with Honors. Members of his research group came from over 36 different countries and contributed to over 400 peer-reviewed publications. He co-authored and edited several books; including "Molecular Photobiology" in 1969, "Molecular Basis of Life" in 1968, "Chemical Basis of Life" in 1973, "Molecules to Living Cells" in 1980, as well as a "Laboratory Manual of Research Procedures" in DNA repair. He was a founding Editor of the Journal, DNA Repair, served on the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science, as a Senior Editor for Cancer Research and a member of the Editorial Board for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, USA from 2003 to 2021.
In addition to his scholarly commitments at Stanford Dr. Hanawalt served on the Physiological Chemistry Study Section, the Chemical Pathology Study Section and the Scientific Advisory Board for the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health. He served on the Council for Extramural Grants for the American Cancer Society. He was a Visiting Research Scholar at the Frontier Bioscience Graduate School in Osaka, Japan in 2007; and appointed to the Fulbright Specialized Roster, in the Council for International Exchange of Scholars in 2014. He served on the Board of Trustees for Oberlin College from 1998 to 2007.
Dr. Hanawalt is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA); a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Society for Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also an elected Foreign Associate in the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). He was president of the Environmental Mutagen Society (EMS), on the Board of Directors for the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and on the Executive Board for the Biophysical Society. He has won annual research awards from the American Society for Photobiology and the EMS, as well as the International Mutation Research Award, and the AACR-Princess Takamatsu Lectureship. He won the John B. Little Award in Radiation Sciences from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2002. He received a Senior Scholar Award from the Ellison Medical Research Foundation, and for 14 years, held an Outstanding Investigator Grant from the National Cancer Institute. He received the Wilbur Cross Medal from the Yale University Graduate School Alumni Association in 2015, and in 2016, the ALAMCTA Award for the discovery of DNA repair pathways and mechanisms.
