Pearson with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Distinguishing herself as an educator over four decades, Pearson's last appointment was teacher of civics and world history for seventh and eighth grade students at a Huntsville, AL, Magnet School, "The Academy of Science and Foreign Languages," 2001 to retirement in 2007. During tenure at ASFL, she was selected to be a tutor of "Civics and Citizenship" for the United States Department of State as a Teaching Diplomat to Russia (2003) and Uzbekistan (2006). Among prior noteworthy positions, Pearson taught public and private elementary school students in Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Alabama. A significant honor was her selection as a finalist for the prestigious Disney National Educator of the Year Award in 2000. One of her proudest achievements was serving as coordinator of "The Gifted & Talented Students Education Program" at the Denton Independent School District in Denton, Texas, 1991 to 1996.
Serving as a design and teacher consultant, Ms. Pearson helped establish Dixie Elementary School in Lexington, Kentucky, 1966-1970 as an experimental non-graded school. In 1992, the Dixie program was featured by Peter Jennings' "ABC World News Tonight." Dixie Elementary was highlighted "... as a school where teaching is done as it ought to be done."
Professional organizations have been fortunate to have Ms. Pearson as a member. Among them is the American Association of University Women and P.E.O. International. The latter is a philanthropic and educational organization serving to promote and celebrate the advancement of women worldwide. As a P.E.O., she contributed as Chapter President for six years in Denton & College Station Texas as well as Huntsville, Alabama Chapters where she was invited to join the hierarchy for Alabama State President. Rounding out her professional affiliations included serving in The Denton County Women's Club as well as being awarded membership in several educational and other women's academic honor societies.
Serving as a member of the board of directors for the City-County Day School in Denton, Texas, and Saint Michael's Academy in Bryan, Texas, other activities included the Delta Zeta Sorority and The Denton Benefit League. Initiated to DZ while a college freshman in 1960, the DZ National Alumni President recruited her to serve as the Chapter Director for the University of Louisiana-Lafayette DZ Chapter for the years 1972-75. Always active in her community, Pearson chaired ball invitations for the non-profit Denton Benefit League between 1988 and 1996. The organization, founded in 1973, raised money for local nonprofits and developed leadership skills among women. Today, 2014-2021, she still serves on the board of directors for Learning Quest.
Born in Port Arthur, TX, Pearson prepared for her teaching career at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX, 1960-1963, earning the Bachelor of Science degree in three years in elementary education specializing in history. Having attended graduate schools at L.S.U., The University of Tennessee, MIT, Colorado, and The University of North Texas, she subsequently earned certification as a "Gifted & Talented Students' Teacher" through The University of North Texas.
