Dr. Mwangi has flourished as a science and technology teacher, supervisor, evaluator and administrator currently focusing on his work as the founder of independent educational training firm K-20 Personalized PD Consulting. He has been additionally active as a member of the professional development committee with the National Science Teachers' Association. Dr. Mwangi describes teaching as "a calling" and "a part of his blood," and began teaching agriculture and biology to students in Kenya in 1994 shortly after earning a Bachelor of Science in science foundations from Egerton University.
Relocating to New Jersey in the early 2000s, Dr. Mwangi found success with Kean University and Community Access Unlimited as an academic specialist while pursuing a K-12 teacher licensure, a Master of Science in biotechnology and a UNIX Systems Administrator certification. In addition to teaching undergraduate biology courses as a member of the adjunct faculty at Kean University, he is the author of a high school-level immunology curriculum sponsored by the American Association of Immunologists. Moreover, Dr. Mwangi has served as a volunteer faculty member at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey since concluding his doctoral studies at the school in 2013.
While making the aforementioned contributions to science education at the K-12 and college levels, Dr. Mwangi continued his work in research science as a protein development scientist for Bristol-Myers Squibb through 2005 and a support scientist in the Bone Marrow Transplant Lab at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 2007. Since 2015, he has worked with the East Orange School District as a data coordinator, STEM teacher trainer and Science Chairman. Additionally, Dr. Mwangi established K-20 Personalized PD Consulting in 2017.
Furthermore, Dr. Mwangi is a member of the board of directors of the Edkairos Corporation as well as a Google certified educator and trainer. He has also accepted numerous awards and accolades for his work as an educator, including a 2016 New Jersey Governor's Teacher of the Year Award and a 2018 Kean University Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching. His research has been notably published in the Journal of Immunology, and he helped pilot a program still available in New Jersey to allow high school students to pursue college credits prior to graduation. Dr. Mwangi looks forward to continuing his involvement in science education at all levels for years to come, and hopes to increase his emphasis on writing and curricular development in the coming years.
