Following an exceptional career in academia, Dr. Minault was bestowed with the distinguished title of professor emerita at the University of Texas CUT) at Austin. Hired in 1972 and later promoted to full professor in 1997, she taught various courses in the department of history on the history of India, Islam in South Asia, and women in Asia throughout her tenure. Some of these courses included European Empires in Asia, Gandhi and Gandhism, Muslim India Before 1750, European Expansion in Asia, and Women in South Asian Societies. Dr. Minault also conducted extensive research in the areas of 19th and 20th century South Asian history, ranging from religion and politics to women's movements.
As a part of her scholarly commitments, Dr. Minault served as a visiting assistant professor and field director of the Berkeley Urdu language program in Lahore, Pakistan, for the University of California at Berkeley during the fall of 1976. She later served as a visiting professor at the Center for Indian and South Asian Studies in the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences in Paris during 1990. Preceding her career as an educator, Dr. Minault served with the U.S. Information Service between 1961 and 1964, where she spent time as a trainee in Washington, D.C., a junior officer in Beirut, and an assistant cultural affairs officer in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
A prolific writer, Dr. Minault has authored seven books and dozens of scholarly articles. She has written more than 50 book reviews in such publications as the Journal of Asian Studies, the Middle East Journal and American Historical Review, and has presented at numerous professional conferences. Some of her books include: "The Khilafat Movement: Religious Symbolism and Political Mobilization In India" in 1984, "Secluded Scholars: Women's Education and Muslim Social Reform in Colonial India" in 1998, "Gender, Language, and Learning: Essays in Indo-Muslim Cultural History" in 2009; as editor: "The Extended Family: Women and Political Participation in India" in 1981, and "Separate Worlds: Studies of Purdah in South Asia" in 1982. Dr. Minault also translated "Voices of Silence," published in 1986.
Dr. Minault was born in Minneapolis. After graduating from Northfield school, she attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1961. She subsequently attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she received a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in South Asia Regional Studies in 1966 and 1972, respectively. Fluent in English, French and Hindi/Urdu, Dr. Minault is also knowledgeable in Persian, Italian, Spanish and German.
Dr. Minault's professional endeavors include membership in several professional organizations, including the Association for Asian Studies and the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians. She is also a past secretary of the American Institute of Pakistan Studies. Lauded for her scholarly excellence throughout the span of her career, Dr. Minault received several research grants and fellowships, including from the National Humanities Center, the Social Science Research Counsel and the National Endowment of the Humanities.
