A renowned cardiologist and scholar for many years, Dr. Liebler retired in 2004 after a successful tenure in South Florida. Originally declining employment with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, he relocated to Coral Gables, Florida, where he began his own private practice in internal medicine and cardiology. Treating patients with various symptoms relating to his specialty with the utmost precision and care, Dr. Liebler was also affiliated with the Doctor's Hospital in Coral Gables, a 281-bed acute care facility, as chairman of the board and chief of staff. Additionally, he taught for many years as a clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida.
Among his noteworthy achievements in medicine, Dr. Liebler was best known for his work in developing and publishing a method for testing patients' lungs separately, which better guided surgeons while treating patients with lung disease, and a procedure for filtering fluid in the kidneys that was a precurser to kidney dialysis. He also developed and published a method for draining fluid from the abdomen. Well-known in his community, Dr. Liebler was instrumental in the formation of one of the very first emergency fire rescue programs in the United States in the city of Miami, which was a huge success and was seen on local television for his expertise in a 15-minute television show on medical matters.
Dr. Liebler's years of research have been documented by authoring or co-authoring numerous scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals. He had covered topics ranging from surgical procedures, infections and multiple salmonella types to writing about the relationship of fatty liver disease and cirrhosis.
A faithful leader in his community, Dr. Liebler enjoyed serving his church as a lay reader and Eucharistic minister, and by bringing communion to the homes of those parishioners too sick to attend service. He also served on the Ecclesiastical Court of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida.
A 1938 graduate of the Avon Old Farms School for Middle and High School as the Chief Justice of the Student Court, Dr. Liebler notably received the Order of Old Farms, which is bestowed on students for scholastics, scholarship and character. Accepted to the prestigious Harvard University after high school, he received a Bachelor of Science in biochemical science in 1942. Additional educational pursuits include a Doctor of Medicine from Temple University in Philadelphia, which Dr. Liebler completed in just three years on an inactive U.S. Army commission, and an internship at the Philadelphia General Hospital. He then served at the Beacon VA TB Hospital, where he advanced to captain and served to chief resident in cardiology at the Brooklyn VA Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Honorably discharged from the military in 1948, Dr. Liebler then completed residency work in pathology, pulmonary medicine, internal medicine and cardiology, as well as a research fellowship, before becoming board certified in internal medicine.
Elected by his peers, Dr. Liebler was named a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He was also recognized with various awards and honors from the Dade County Medical Society, the Brevard County Medical Society and the Indian River County Medical Society.
Born in Greenwich, Connecticut, in March 1921, Dr. Liebler passed away in February 2020 at the age of 98 in Vero Beach. He is survived by his wife Carol B. Haight, his three sons, a daughter, a brother and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
