Following a prominent career in law that spanned 40 years, Mr. Kanter retired in 1999 from Merck-Medco Managed Care LLC, a pharmacy benefits management company in Montvale, New Jersey. Joining the organization in 1992, he served as the co-general counsel and senior vice president for five years before being named as a special counsel in 1997. Mr. Kanter was previously employed by Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP, a large law firm with locations throughout the country. Representing clients at the firm's headquarters in New York, the largest of the firm's offices, Mr. Kanter gained recognition for his expertise in corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, and public offerings as an associate attorney from 1959 until 1967 and as a partner between 1967 and 1992.
Returning to his original passion of music after concluding his legal career, Mr. Kanter has focused his time by composing modern classical music. He especially enjoys writing his own music because it gives him the opportunity to show off his creative side. Mr. Kanter also sponsors the annual First and Second Prizes for Best Orchestral Composition at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and the annual Mivos/Kanter Prize at for a new string quartet, which is made possible through his own generous contributions. The winning composer of the Mivos/Kanter Prize is notably selected from over 100 applicants each year and receives a cash prize and a performance of the work by the Mivos Quartet in New York City.
Mr. Kanter was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and began playing piano in middle school. After graduating from high school, he was accepted to the prestigious Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in music in 1953 and was a member of the Harvard Law Review at Harvard Law School.. Mr. Kanter subsequently decided to continue his education and become an attorney, following the lead of his older brother.
After completing a Bachelor of Law on campus in 1956, Mr. Kanter served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1958 and was soon admitted to practice law by the California and New York Bar Associations. Years later, after retiring from his law practice, Mr. Kanter participated in musical classes in New York at The Julliard School and Columbia University and studied composition under the tutelage of Dr. Reiko Fueting at the Manhattan School of Music. Supporting his musical endeavors, he is a member and composer of the New York Composers Circle.
