Dr. Trader is a retired orthopedic surgeon and medical administrator celebrating more than 40 years of service to his patients and discipline. Growing up as a sickly child with severe allergies, he spent much of his childhood under the care of several physicians, and became inspired by their knowledge and ability. Dr. Trader completed coursework at Marquette University before enrolling in the Medical College of Wisconsin, from which he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1971.
From 1967 to 1978, Dr. Trader advanced to the rank of lieutenant commander in the United States Navy, and he would remain active in the United States Navy Reserves for four years following his service. He began his medical career in 1972 as an emergency room physician at Columbia Hospital and Saint Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee. He moved into private practice in 1979 as a surgeon with the Orthopedic Associates of Manitowoc, with which he practiced until his retirement in 2011. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Trader held administrative roles at hospitals and medical centers throughout his career, including ten years as the president of the Orthopedic Associates of Manitowoc.
Dr. Trader was formerly appointed as the chief of staff and the chief of surgery at the Holy Family Medical Center, for which he is currently a retired member of the institutional review, ethics, and executive committees. He was instrumental in the creation of a county first responder and paramedic program, operating as its founding medical director. He has contributed extensively to scientific and medical journals, and has been recognized as a Walter Zeit fellow with the Medical College of Wisconsin and a Paul Harris fellow with Rotary International. He has continued his legacy of community service in his retirement, further flourishing with the Wisconsin Medical Society, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra and the Manitowoc Noon Rotary Club. Furthermore, Dr. Trader has participated in the choir at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish since the 1970s.
