MIAMI LAKES, FL, February 24, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present James W. Conley, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Conley celebrates significant experience as a university educator and has been noted for his leadership qualities and successes. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Drawing on studies and activities at the Religious of the Sacred Heart's Hardey Preparatory School in Chicago and Jesuit-sponsored Loyola Academy in Wilmette (IL), Dr. Conley earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Georgetown University, a Master of Arts in Italian from Middlebury College and a Doctor of Philosophy in comparative literature from the University of Wisconsin. A diver on the Loyola swim team and a starboard oarsman on the Georgetown crew, Dr. Conley frequented daily liturgies at his high school and college chapels, initiating a life-long commitment to spiritual and academic development. His interest in being a university educator was inspired by participating in the Georgetown University honors program and through studying abroad in Italy. Dr. Conley has taught on behalf of Gonzaga-in-Florence in Florence, Italy, at Montgomery County Community College and at Villanova University. He joined the faculty at St. Thomas University in 1976 and retired from his position as a professor of English and Humanities in 2018, receiving the distinguished title of professor emeritus.
One of the founding faculty members of the Saint Thomas University honors program, Dr. Conley edited the 1983 Self-Study for re-affirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, was appointed as the director of the St. Thomas University honors program, and participated in National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institutes at Princeton University, the Huntington Library, Northwestern University, and UCLA. As a scholar Dr. Conley co-authored "Petrarch and Augustine: The Confessions and the Canzoniere" and made numerous other contributions in Renaissance criticism.
Dr. Conley received the Thomas Sessa Award for Dedication to University Students in 1978, and the Robert M. Sullivan Award for Teacher of the Year in 1979 and 2005. He served as Chairperson of English and Humanities from 1992 to 2004 and in 2005-2007 became the president of Delta Epsilon Sigma, the first national honors society for Catholic colleges and universities. Supportive of study abroad opportunities, Dr. Conley directed St. Thomas University's study abroad programs in Assisi, Italy, 1999-2002 and at El Escorial, Spain, 2016. Both in 2010-2011 and in 2014-2015. Dr. Conley served St. Thomas University as Interim Dean of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and in retirement he has devoted himself to treasuring his family, serving as a lector and Eucharistic minister at his local parish in Miami Lakes, and editing selected writings of Monsignor Edward Casey, a missionary to the Philippines in the mid-1900's.
