After four decades in the classroom teaching and chairing the science departments at several public and private high schools in the state of Connecticut, Dr. Roy changed career paths. Transitioning into environmental health and safety, he was acquired by Glastonbury Public Schools in Glastonbury, Connecticut, in 1981, where he served as the director of K-12 and as the director of science and safety until 2006. Still aligned with the district today, Dr. Roy continues to serve in the role of the director of environmental health and safety.
Apart from his work with the district, Dr. Roy has been aligned with National Safety Consultants LLC as a manager and senior consultant since 1996. The organization, which notably specializes in school safety, focuses its attention on areas of the buildings that require the most need, like the science and technology laboratories and the art rooms. As an authorized Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) instructor, Dr. Roy bears a wealth of expertise regarding the design, planning and construction of such rooms, as well as legal safety, employee training, and other pertinent areas.
As a seasoned researcher and expert in his field, Dr. Roy has become a frequent speaker, author and consultant. He is presently a safety compliance officer for National Science Education Leadership Association (NSELA) and has been active in various capacities for the International Council of Associations for Science Education (ICASE), including as a safety committee member, executive committee member and North American region representative. Among other involvements to his credit, Dr. Roy has maintained positions as the chief safety compliance adviser and chief safety blogger for the National Science Teaching Association's (NSTA) website, as a ICASE science and safety consultant for United Nations UNESCO headquarters in Paris and, among numerous other roles, as an expert witness regarding laboratory accidents.
As a safety, technology and engineering education columnist and writer, Dr. Roy has contributed over 800 state, national, and international publications since 2005 and has co-authored 10 books, including "The Science Laboratory Manual" in 2015 and "Safer Makerspaces, Fab Labs, and STEM Labs: A Collaborative Guide!" in 2017. His journey in writing, however, began in 1984 as the co-editor for the Connecticut Journal of Science Education. From there, he became an editor for Science Leadership Trend Notes in 1989. Since 2001, Dr. Roy has been a syndicated columnist for Safety Science, an international journal for research in the science and technology of human and industrial safety. He also provides safety laboratory news through his twitter account five times per week.
Dr. Roy has been instrumental at the academic level as well. Teaching courses and working as a consultant for Project RISE for the University of Connecticut Cooperative Program from 1974 to 1981, he simultaneously taught as an adjunct faculty member at Tunxis Community College between 1975 and 1990 and Manchester Community College from 1976 until 1990. Additionally, Dr. Roy was a lecturer and science curriculum consultant, safety and science education consultant and national director for the National Science Supervisors Association from 1988 to 1991, as well as the executive director of the Leadership Institute at Central Connecticut State University between 1989 and 1991.
An alumnus of Central Connecticut State College, Dr. Roy acquired a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in 1968 and 1974, respectively. He subsequently attended the University of Connecticut, where he completed a diploma in professional education in 1981, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in 1985. Dr. Roy has also earned certification as an instructor of OSHA, a teacher of mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and general science, and is a certified academic administrator through the Connecticut State Department of Education.
As a part of his commitment to the environmental health and safety industry, Dr. Roy has been aligned with several prominent professional organizations, including the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the American Society of Safety Engineers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. With respect to his educational background, he has also been active as a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Connecticut Science Teachers Association, and several other similar organizations. Dr. Roy is also a past president of the National Science Supervisors Association and the Connecticut Science Supervisors Association.
Commemorated on numerous occasions, Dr. Roy was named as the Teacher of the Year Award in Colchester, Connecticut, in 1980. He also received an Outstanding Administrator Award from Glastonbury Public Schools every year between 1985 and 1987, a Prestigious Connecticut Celebration of Excellence Award in 1987, a Connecticut State Science Educator Leader Award from the Connecticut Science Supervisor Association in 2002 and a National Science Supervisor of the Year Award from the National Science Education Leadership Association in 2003. Moreover, Dr. Roy secured several grants from such organizations as the National Science Foundation.
