As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
While he was employed for five years with the Internal Revenue Service as an agent and tax law specialist in Washington, DC, Mr. Epstein completed his law degree at Georgetown University Law Center, where he was an editor of the GU Law Journal. Upon graduation, he accepted a position as an associate attorney at Cades, Schutte, Fleming and Wright, the largest law firm in Honolulu, where he became a partner in 1978 and remained Chairman of their Tax Department for nearly four decades. Mr. Epstein has also taught law courses as an adjunct professor at the University of Hawaii Law School and the Beiwai Foreign Studies University Law School in Beijing.
Serving his local community in Honolulu through his involvement with various civic organizations and activities, Mr. Epstein has been President and Chairman of the Board of the Maitreya Institute and of the T'ai H'suan Foundation, since 1983, and a Director of numerous charitable organizations-for many of which he prepared organizational documents and secured tax qualification, pro bono. Mr. Epstein was Chairman of the World Medicine School of Acupuncture and helped them become one of the first nationally accredited Acupuncture colleges in the US, and Vice Chairman of the Queen's Medical Center and Trustee of the Queen's Health System, the largest hospital system in Hawaii.
Among his greatest mentors, Mr. Epstein notes his mother, who worked at the U.S. Department of Justice while coming of age. He also enjoyed the tutelage of a high school teacher/attorney, who influenced him to become an attorney. After graduating, Mr. Epstein was accepted to the University of Maryland, where he received a Bachelor of Science in accounting in 1967. Following this accomplishment, he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Georgetown University in 1972. He has been admitted to practice law by the Virginia, Hawaii and D.C. Bar Associations.
A professional member of several industry-related organizations, Mr. Epstein was notably responsible for connecting the Hawaii Bar Association to two city bar associations in China.
