Dr. Verkauf's successful career in medicine as a reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist began in 1974. Hired by the Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida (USF) shortly after exiting the military, he contributed five years as the director of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility and as an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology. A respected educator, Dr. Verkauf continued to teach part-time and transitioned into the role of an associate professor, where he remained active until 2011.
In addition to his commitments at the university, Dr. Verkauf initiated and managed as its president the Reproductive Medicine Group in Tampa, for nearly three decades between 1981 and 2010. The group was renowned throughout the state as one of the largest and most successful of its kind. A pioneer in his field, his tenure and leadership included assisting thousands of patients in their path to parenthood. In this capacity, he was notably involved in the first in vitro fertilization birth in Florida. In 2011, Dr. Verkauf resumed his career at USF as the director and founder of the Menopause Center and as a full professor of obstetrics and gynecology until retirement. He was also notably affiliated with several hospitals between 1991 and 2015.
As an extension of his work, Dr. Verkauf consulted in gynecology on behalf of several hospitals, including the VA Hospital in Tampa, the Regional Hospital at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa and the Bayfront Medical Center in Saint Petersburg, Florida, as well as for several private organizations. He also served as the initial vice president and a board member of what has become St. Joseph's Women's Hospital in Tampa. He served as a delegate to the American Medical Association representing the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility from 2000 until 2017.
A talented writer, Dr. Verkauf has authored four medical texts, contributed chapters to several books on behalf of his colleagues and has authored a multitude of scientific articles and abstracts in scholarly journals. He also continues to remain active on the editorial board and the board of censors of the Hillsborough County Medical Association Inc. since 2017. Dr. Verkauf's books include "Congenital Malformations of the Female Reproductive Tract" in 1993, "Practicing Medicine Profitability" in 2000, "Evolution of an Academic Department" in 2011 and his latest, "Sex, Science, Society and Reproduction: The Pill that Changed America," which was published in 2020.
Born and raised in Tampa, Dr. Verkauf graduated from H.B. Plant High School. He attended college at Emory University and later obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree at Tulane University in 1965 and a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Florida in 1997.
Additional early educational pursuits to his credit include a surgical internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, and a residency in obstetrics-gynecology and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. After completing his studies, Dr. Verkauf served for two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the department of obstetrics and gynecology as a major at Womack Army Hospital at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, between 1972 and 1974. He subsequently became board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
Dr. Verkauf is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology Inc. A respected voice in his areas of interest, he also maintained membership with numerous other industry-related organizations, including the American Fertility Society, the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the Society of Reproductive Surgeons, the South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Florida Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
Dr. Verkauf received several training and research grants throughout his career. He has also been recognized for his expertise in various professional medical publications. Among them, he was consistently named to Castle Connolly Guide as a Top Doctor in Florida between 1996 and 2014. Dr. Verkauf also received a Distinguished Physician Certificate from the Florida Medical Association in 2000 and 2006.
