Donald E. Melnick, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Melnick, MD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Melnick celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. After his retirement in January 2017, Dr. Melnick continued as a distinguished fellow of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME®) until January 2020, He has accumulated nearly four decades of professional excellence with the organization. Originally joining the Board in 1983 as a senior medical evaluation officer, he advanced to the role of the president, serving for more than 16 years between 2000 and 2017. The NBME is notably an organization whose mission, "To protect the health of the public through state-of-the-art assessment of healthcare professional, is realized through various assessments and educational services to students, educators, regulators, and those in the medical field. The NBME's most notable product is the United States Medical Licensing Examination®, required for initial licensure of physician in all US licensing jurisdictions.

During Dr. Melnick's tenure as senior vice president and president, he was responsible for overseeing development of international services and for optimizing significant relations with such organizations as the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Board of Medical Specialties. He also played a key role in the implementation of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Furthermore, Dr. Melnick oversaw the process for the computer delivery of the national medical licensure examination including a unique computer simulation of patient care problem solving, which was followed by a live patient simulated examination where physicians could be rated for their communication and technical physical examination skills.

Fascinated and inspired by the opportunity to bridge clinical medicine with organizational management, Dr. Melnick believes it is a crucial combination that can motivate teams much more effectively in attaining common goals. Apart from his many years in management, he spent several years as the medical director for John Marshall Medical Services in Huntington, West Virginia, and in academia as an associate professor at Marshall University in the school of medicine in Huntington. Once acquired by the NBME, he devoted nearly 15 years as an adjunct assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and at Hahnemann University beginning in 1984. During his impressive career, Dr. Melnick also contributed over 40 articles to various peer-reviewed journals in his area of expertise.

Dr. Melnick studied at Columbia Union College (now Washington Adventist University), acquiring a Bachelor of Arts in 1971. Continuing his studies, he earned a Doctor of Medicine at Loma Linda University in 1975. Dr. Melnick is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Supporting his medical career, Dr. Melnick has maintained his affiliation with a number of pertinent organizations. To wit, he is a member of the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association. Dr. Melnick was named a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics in 1988 and a distinguished fellow of the American College of Physician Executives (now the American Association for Physician Leadership) in 2005. In 2010, the American College of Physicians recognized his contributions to medicine by electing him to Mastership in the American College of Physicians.

To honor his long and extensive years of service, Dr. Melnick was the recipient of a Columbia Union College Medallion of Excellence in 2004, was named an Honored Alumnus in 2005 and Alumnus of the Year in 2013 by Loma Linda University and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Federation of State Medical Board in 2015. More recently, he was selected for a Special Recognition Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges in 2017. Besides his paid positions, Dr. Melnick has volunteered with his church. He is also chapter director for the Serenity Threshold Singers of Southeastern Pennsylvania, a chapter of the Threshold Choir International.
