Dr. Gelburd was a professor of art history at Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) for 19-years. During her incredible career on campus, she taught Non-Eurocentric and Contemporary Art History, incorporating Asian, African American, Japanese and Cuban art into her curriculum. She also conducted extensive research, traveling to such countries as India, Japan, South Africa and Nepal, among many others. Prior to her tenure at ECSU, Dr. Gelburd held academic appointments at Hofstra University in New York, where she served as director of the Hofstra University Museum Studies Program and the Hofstra Museum, curating major innovative exhibitions such as Blossoming of New Promises on the Harlem Renaissance, and published Mother and Child: Henry Moore. She also taught at the School of Visual Arts, and Springfield College. She was a curator at the Morris Museum of Arts and Sciences and worked at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC as a lecturer.
Notably, she was the Executive Director of the Council for Creative Projects, an international non-profit organization that curated and circulated unique exhibitions worldwide. Some of the exhibitions curated and related publications included Bearden in Black and White with the Whitney Museum of American Art; The Painted Sounds of Romare Bearden; Creative Solutions to Ecological Issues which included a forward by Vice President Al Gore; and Silent Screams from the Russian Underground.
Dr. Gelburd has lectured worldwide at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, Williams College and the Chicago Art Institute as well as in Goa India, Havana Cuba, Taipei Taiwan, and Johannesburg South Africa.
Boasting a portfolio comprised of numerous exhibitions and publications on Dr. Gelburd enjoyed seeing how cultures interacted with and enhanced one another. Over the years, she has curated over two dozen exhibitions across eight countries and 20 U.S. states, all of which have focused on topics such as race, poverty, prejudice and religion. Her publications included: The Transparent Thread: Asian Philosophy in Recent American Art; Ajiaco: Stirrings of the Cuban Soul; Robeson, DuBois and the Spirit of African Culture; A Graphic Odyssey: Romare Bearden as Printmaker.
She continues to write books, poetry and be involved in personal exhibitions of her own artwork from California to Massachusetts and abroad in such locations as Skopelos, Greece, and Majorda, Goa, India. More recently, Dr. Gelburd's work on Japan's tsunami was featured in a solo exhibition in New London, Connecticut, in 2017. Much of her work has been notably reviewed and she has been interviewed and then showcased in print, online, and on television and radio.
Active in her community, Dr. Gelburd was a member of the Sea Cliff Landmarks Association and was recently elected to the Otis Historical Commission. She organized the Windham Project in Connecticut and served on the Farmington River Regional School District's school board. She was a member of the Global Forum of Spiritual and Parliamentary Leaders on Human Survival, a worldwide organization devoted to changing environmental and developmental values within their countries. Dr. Gelburd was an active member of the Long Island Museum Association, the Association of College and University Museums, the American Association of Museums and the College of Art Association. She was also a former member of the board of directors of Artists Representing Environmental Art.
After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY), Gelburd obtained a Master of Arts from The Ohio State University, a Master of Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy in Contemporary American Art and Art History from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
Throughout her career, Dr. Gelburd secured numerous research grants for her exhibitions and publications from The Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the State of Connecticut and the Ford Foundation. In honor of her career, she received an award from the Council of Connecticut Teaching Excellence Award. in 2008. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been cited in the 65th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the East and the fourth edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
