An esteemed intellectual property and patent attorney with decades of expertise to his credit, Mr. Parkhurst presently serves of counsel at the Gierach Law Firm Specializing in litigation, transactional, counseling and solicitation in patent, trademark, copyright and computer law causes, he has been practicing for more than 50 years. Throughout this time, Mr. Parkhurst has litigated dozens of patent infringement and other intellectual property lawsuits, and has prosecuted numerous patent applications and registered countless trademarks.
Having begun his professional journey in 1968, when he joined Wolfe, Hubbard, Voit and Osann as an associate attorney. Mr. Parkhurst quickly advanced in his career, becoming a partner at several other firms throughout the city. More recently, he spent eight years at Hughes Socol Piers Resnick and Dym Ltd. as a partner and manager of the firm's intellectual property practice between 2006 and 2016. Mr. Parkhurst notably held the same positions at the prominent law firms of Wildman, Harrold, Allen and Dixon LLP, of Holland and Knight and of Schiff, Hardin and Waite.
Well regarded for his efforts in academia as well, Mr. Parkhurst distinguished himself as an adjunct professor at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago from 1980 to 1984, and has taught at the Illinois Institute of Technology in the Chicago-Kent College of Law since 1989. In this role, he has particularly enjoyed teaching such courses as Intensive Intellectual Property Trial Advocacy. In addition to his commitments at the two schools, Mr. Parkhurst was involved in with the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA), where he participated in two courses and later became an instructor. He also developed a course that was very similar to a course taught by the NITA, which he later taught Chicago law school students studying intellectual property law.
To support Continuing Legal Education (CLE), Mr. Parkhurst has also been involved in numerous theatrical productions as the co-owner and operator of Perfectly Legal Productions LLC alongside his wife and a friend. The company develops and writes scripts, casts actors and stages live theatrical productions to tell the stories of major legal events and trials for CLE credit. Apart from his productions, Mr. Parkhurst has also contributed articles to various professional legal journals.
Dedicated to various community efforts throughout the course of his career, Mr. Parkhurst began serving as a hearing officer for the Illinois Pollution Control Board, which is responsible for adopting environmental regulations and deciding contested environmental cases throughout the state. He found success in this capacity between 1972 and 1996. Mr. Parkhurst also became a member of Lifeline Pilots Inc., where he notably earned distinction as the president from 1994 to 1996. Located in Peoria, Illinois, the organization, with the help of volunteer pilots, assists with free air transportation for passengers with various medical and humanitarian needs who cannot afford to pay.
To remain aware of developments affecting the field, Mr. Parkhurst retains his affiliation with a number ~f pertinent organizations. To wit, he is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Licensing Executives Society, the Chicago Bar Association and the Patent Law Association of Chicago. Mr. Parkhurst is also a past president of the Chicago Literary Club and a former secretary of the Adventurers Club of Chicago. Recognized for his work, he has consistently been named to Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers and Best of U.S. IP Lawyers.
An alumnus of the University of Illinois, Mr. Parkhurst received a Bachelor of Applied Science in general engineering in 1963. Shortly thereafter, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1966. Following this accomplishment, he served as a captain in the U.S. Anny Corps of Engineers between 1966 and 1968. Mr. Parkhurst has been admitted to practice law by the Illinois Bar Association, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh and Federal Circuits, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the Supreme Court of the United States. He also completed coursework at Northwestern University in design of digital circuitry and computer architecture.
