Robert M. Haralick, PhD, Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Computer Science

Dr. Haralick lends years of expertise in computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning and image analysis to his work as a distinguished professor with the Graduate Center, City University of New York.

POMONA, NY, March 04, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert M. Haralick, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A seasoned computer science professional and educator, in 2000 Dr. Haralick was honored with a distinguished professorship of Computer Science at The Graduate Center, City University of New York. In 2013, he was asked to strengthen the Computer Science PhD program and to serve as its Executive Officer. He began his task by working with the Executive Committee to have the governing document of the Computer Science PhD program revised and to retain only those faculty who did substantial research. He introduced new courses, and selected relevant classes taught by faculty who either had international standing or who would soon have international standing. Having lead the effort to introduce a new Data Science Masters program to accompany the PhD program, he completed his two terms as Executive Officer in 2019. Previously Dr. Haralick earned distinction as the Boeing Clairmont Egtvedt Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington between 1986 and 2000, during which time he was, as well, an adjunct professor of Computer Science and adjunct professor of Bioengineering.

A leading expert in the areas of computer vision, image texture analysis, pattern recognition, machine learning and document image analysis, Dr. Haralick honed his considerable expertise in executive and education positions with Mnemonics Inc, Machine Vision International, The University of Kansas and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He organized IEEE workshops and conferences, was the conference chair for the 2001 International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition and organized various NATO advanced study institutes. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to the field of image texture analysis, computer vision, including working on inferring camera geometry from perspective projection views of known objects, the use of the facet model for image edge detection and topographic feature detection, mathematical morphology for image shape analysis and worked out the important morphological sampling theorem. Dr. Haralick is especially proud to having graduated 40 PhD students and having made strides in multiple fields shown by having more than 71,000 citations to his published papers in the scientific archival literature, as indicated by Google Scholar.

During the earliest stages of his vocational journey, Dr. Haralick earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Kansas, a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science and finally a Doctor of Philosophy. Professionally he has served as Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, a two year term as the president of the International Association for Pattern Recognition, (IAPR) 1996-1998, had numerous terms as associate editor for various journals including Pattern Recognition, IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence and many others and served on committees of other academic professional societies.

Dr. Haralick has coauthored academic books such as the two volume work Robot and Computer Vision, a book that is said to be a tour de force, and the book Differential Equations for Engineers. Dr. Haralick has had an interest in spirituality and contributed such books as God Consciousness: Living With Meaning and Purpose, God Consciousness: working the Sefirot and Netivot, Torah Codes: A Glimpse of the Infinite, The Torah Codes and Israel Today, and many other books. In 1971-1972, he was an early contributor to digital computer art, having exhibited his work at the University of Rhode Island, Florida State University, San Diego State University, Dulin Gallery of Art and the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery.

For his outstanding body of work, Dr. Haralick has been recognized on numerous occasions, earning early in his career, the Young Outstanding Faculty Award through the Dow Chemical Company and Certificates of Appreciation Awards through the IEEE Computer Society. In 1984 he was honored as a Fellow of IEEE for his contributions in image processing and computer vision. In 1994 he was made Fellow of the IAPR for his contributions in pattern recognition, image processing, mathematical morphology and service to IAPR. He was elected president of IAPR in 1996 serving the allowed two year term. In 2016, the IAPR awarded the King-Sun Fu Prize to Dr. Haralick, an award given once every two years. Dr. Haralick is the 15th recipient. This is the high highest honor in the field of Pattern Recognition. This recognition was for his contributions in image analysis, including remote sensing, texture analysis, mathematical morphology, consistent labeling and system performance analysis. His extensive website is haralick.org. Publications such as Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World have also recognized him for his professional excellence. At the end of 2021 Dr. Haralick will retire from the City University of New York to embark on a new area of research: subtle energy
