RALEIGH, NC, March 05, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Louis J. Muglia MD, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Driven by a desire to impact human health in a positive manner, Dr. Muglia pursued a career in the sciences and medicine, earning a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan during the early 1980s. He subsequently completed a Doctor of Philosophy and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Chicago in 1986 and 1988, respectively, before obtaining one of his first clinical training as an intern, resident and fellow in pediatrics at Harvard. He began his independent teaching and research faculty roles in 1992 and has been a faculty member since then at such prestigious institutions as Harvard Medical School, the Washington University School of Medicine, and Vanderbilt University. In 2012, Dr. Muglia joined the faculty at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine where he had several leadership roles including the vice chair for research in pediatrics and the A. Graeme Mitchell Chair of the Division of Human Genetics. Likewise, he worked as the co-director of the Perinatal Institute and director of the Center for Prevention of Preterm Birth. Moreover, Dr. Muglia has served in educational and research-related collaborations with Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Medicine and the University of Helsinki.
The results and findings of Dr. Muglia's work have been published in nearly 300 articles throughout his career with key contributions in the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, Nature Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, PLOS Medicine, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and other prominent journals.
Since January 1, 2020, Dr. Muglia serves president and CEO of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. As the president and chief executive officer, he oversees approximately $40M in annual research support to programs, mainly in biomedical sciences, within the United States and Canada. Dr. Muglia also serves as an adjunct professor of pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Among his many honors, Dr. Muglia is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Academy of Medicine.
In light of his outstanding body of work, Dr. Muglia received a Young Investigator Award through the Society for Pediatric Research in 1999, as well as a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Development Award in Biomedical Sciences. In 2020, he was also elected to the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. Though his career has been filled with highlights, he is especially proud of his research in the pathways leading to human birth and risk for preterm birth. His research group identified the regions in maternal DNA that determine the length of pregnancy risks for preterm birth, and the molecular pathways they regulate. Looking toward the future, Dr. Muglia intends to build a series of programs that have a positive impact on major human health issues. Ultimately, he aims to develop greater opportunities in climate change in human health and science communication.
