Mr. Schmitz is an independent investor, private equity professional and turnaround advisor celebrating several decades of expertise in management and restructuring advising. He co-founded Quest Turnaround Advisors in 2002, where he has synthesized a career of diverse experience in managing and restructuring companies across business sectors. During 2020 Mr. Schmitz co-founded two start-up companies specializing in global-wide crypto currency mining and consumer focused Bitcoin distribution. Mr. Schmitz holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan, where he graduated with distinction, in 1963, and is an alumnus of the MIT Sloan School of Management, from which he attained a Master of Science in 1965.
After establishing Quest Turnaround Advisors, Mr. Schmitz was tapped to be a Chief Restructuring Officer ("CRO") or Chief Operating Officer ("COO") of several major multinational operations including NTL (Now Virgin Media), the United Kingdom's largest cable television operator with ancillary divisions throughout Northern and Central Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia. When Mr. Schmitz' took over leadership of NTL's operations the parent company had filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. and reported total debt of $23.4 billion, making it one of the largest bankruptcy filings in the US during the early 2000s. Subsequently he served as the Chief Restructuring Officer of WorldSpace Inc., a global satellite radio provider operating throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. He also served as CRO of the Fontainebleau Hotel-Miami Beach, Florida settling debtor claims so that the hotel could avoid bankruptcy.
Prior to focusing on his work with Quest Turnaround Advisors, Mr. Schmitz had built a reputation for excellence in managing creditors and developing strategies for saving troubled companies. He is the former Managing Director of TCW Capital, the private equity arm of the Trust Company of the West and served as an investment consultant for a private investment firm backed by George Soros from 1990 until 1992. For much of the 1980s, Mr. Schmitz was the chief executive officer of Richard D. Irwin Inc, the book publishing subsidiary of Dow Jones & Company. From 1970 to 1982 Mr. Schmitz was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company specializing in finance and mergers and acquisitions. His history of business leadership goes back to some of his earliest positions as an assistant to the president of the Lima Light and Power Company (Lima, Peru) from 1965 until 1967, and as an acquisition analyst at two major conglomerates, W.R. Grace & Company and Northwest Industries both in New York.
In connection with his restructuring work, Mr. Schmitz has served as an independent director of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company, the Sun-Times Media Group, Premium TV in the UK (Now Perform Media), Dune Energy and SpecTran Corporation (acquired by Lucent in 2001) and as a director of many private equity portfolio companies. He was a proud trustee of the New York State Chapter of the Nature Conservancy in the 19905 and is presently a member of the Dean's Advisory Council at the Sloan School of Management.
