Ms. Sakamoto has found much success as the owner, the president and the chief executive officer of her newly established, experienced-based Preschool-8 school, Ke Kula 'O Ho'omakuapono, in Kula, Hawaii. Opening its doors in 2019, it is located on the island of Maui and operates on over six acres of her family-owned farm. By utilizing Hawaiian education practices, the newest techniques on how to learn in our modern age and combining it with sustainability implementations in farm-based learning, Ke Kula 'O Ho'omakuapono provides a one-of-a-kind learning experience. A safe and nurturing environment, Ms. Sakamoto's private school sets the tone for a unique curriculum by way of academics, linguistics and cross-cultural perspectives that are based on four main components: creativity, conscience, cultivation and culture.
A fourth-generation farmer who began her career as a teacher, Ms. Sakamoto inherited the farm on which the school was founded after her parents passed away. Making the decision to marry her expertise of farming with teaching, she desired to form a school that not only taught children everyday school lessons, but also offered hands-on, practical learning experiences about life and the beautiful agriculture surrounding them. Ms. Sakamoto's deep connection to children, combined with her passion for teaching them the importance of rooting into their culture, knowing who they are and how they will make the world a better place, is what laid the foundation for Ke Kula 'O Ho'omakuapono.
Wrapping up her second academic school year, Ms. Sakamoto is eager for the future of her school and the many lives that she and her teachers will have the pleasure to teach and positively impact. Serving as a role model to every student, she believes that it is crucial to support the school system in order for students to flourish and, ultimately, navigate through the world on their own. A member of the Chi Omega Sorority, Ms. Sakamoto notably received a Bachelor of Art in child development and teaching credential at San Jose State University in 1995.
