An excellent student, she fondly recalls her mother telling her that she could become anything she wanted as long as she was willing to work hard. Dr. Beard subsequently pursued an education at Howard University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1965 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1970. She completed her post graduate training in pediatrics with a fellowship in child development at The Children's Hospital National Medical Center, Washington DC.
Dr. Beard currently excels as a clinical professor of pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and maintains a clinical pediatric practice with Children's National Pediatricians and Associates, Silver Spring MD, where she also serves as a physician-director. Moreover, Dr. Beard is the author of the book, "Salt in Your Sock and Other Tried-and-True Home Remedies," which was published by Three Rivers Press of Random House Books in 2003.
Dr. Beard has been active as a trusted healthcare contributor for national and local print and television outlets. She served as a contributing editor to Good Housekeeping Magazine from 1989 to 1995, where she authored the monthly "Ask Dr. Beard" column. She served as the health advisor, and broadcaster for WUSA-TV Washington DC from 1993 to 1995. From 2000 to 2004, she found success as the health and medical contributor for ABC-TV in Washington, DC. Additionally, Dr. Beard is an Editorial Advisor to Pediatric News, a monthly publication.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Beard serves as a Communications Consultant to industries on issues relating to the care, health, and safety of infants, children, and adolescents. Furthermore, she is a member of the International Women's Forum, the National Medical Association and the HistoryMakers, archived in the Library of Congress. Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, she is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Recognized extensively for her work, she is the recipient of numerous awards, including a 1990 Distinguished Service Award from the National Medical Association and a 1994 Hall of Fame in Medicine Award. Profiled in the National Library of Medicine's "Changing the Face of Medicine" exhibit, Dr. Beard received the 1996 distinguished Howard University Charter Day Award for medicine and community service. She was named by Consumers' Research Council as one of America's Top Doctors (2005-2020). She has been named by U.S. News and World Report as a Top Doctor to present. Dr. Beard was notably cited by President Bill Clinton in his 1993 Address to the Nation on Health Care Reform which she recalls as one of her special career highlights.
