As an adjunct instructor at Morton College in Cicero, Illinois, Dr. Eaton has been taught English composition and humanities courses on the community college campus since 2007. Very passionate about her work, she focuses her lectures mainly on college writing, the writing and performance of poetry, and Shakespeare. Over the past four decades, Dr. Eaton has taught at several other institutions throughout the country, including the College of Du Page and Joliet Junior College in Illinois and the University of Maryland in College Park and Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland.
Utilizing her talents, Dr. Eaton has contributed her expertise as the editor of "Sacred Rivers: A Walk Along Divergent Waters," a 2010 book by authors Marvin R. Young and Carolyn J. Sibr. The text was published through Strawberry Patch Press. Dr. Eaton has also written numerous works of poetry and has contributed to various literary journals throughout her career.
In support of her professional endeavors, Dr. Eaton was a contest chairperson for the Helen Schaible International Sonnet Contest for 10 years and for the Poets and Patrons Chicagoland Poetry Contest for 15 years until 2019. She also served in the capacity of a tour leader on behalf of the University of Illinois at Chicago Scholarship Association for five years, beginning in 2001, and was a Folger Shakespeare Library reader for nearly 15 years, beginning in 1982. Additionally, Dr. Eaton volunteered her time at the First Folio Shakespeare Festival in Oak Brook, Illinois, from 1997 to 2015, and has continued to lead various poetry writing workshops at local libraries and senior residences since 1995.
While attending high school, Dr. Eaton developed a strong interest in theatre after participating in a rendition of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," in which she portrayed the fairy queen. She was also aligned with several great teachers, especially Margarete Cantrall, who was an outstanding poet. After graduating, Dr. Eaton became highly educated in her respected field, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English language and literature in 1976 and a Master of Art in Education and English in 1978 at the University of Illinois. She subsequently earned a second Master of Arts in Shakespeare in 1987 and a Doctor of Philosophy in English literature in 1996 at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Eaton is a member of several industry related organizations that have been influential in her career. Among them, she has maintained involvement with the Poets and Patrons of Chicago, the Illinois State Poetry Society, the National Federation of State Poetry Societies and the Academy of American Poets. From 1982 until 1990, Dr. Eaton received a Renaissance Assistantship from the University of Maryland.
