Well regarded for his passion and commitment to the academic experience, Dr. Johnson's leadership experiences in higher education include serving as vice president for student affairs at Livingstone College, and acting vice president of student life and enrollment management at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He subsequently worked as the senior vice president of enrollment and student services at Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community and Technical College. Dr. Johnson went on to excel as the vice president of student support services at Guilford Technical Community College before stepping into his current role as the president of Southside Virginia Community College.
Initially, Dr. Johnson aspired to study music in his career. However, he decided to focus on a more stable career and became involved in student activities while in college. He found that he enjoyed academic and student development and resolved to pursue a career that would allow him to continue in this vein. Dr. Johnson went on to receive a Bachelor of Science from Defiance College, a Master of Arts from Bowling Green State University and a Doctor of Philosophy in organizational leadership from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
While working at Guilford Technical College, Dr. Johnson is most proud to have led the reversal of long term enrollment decline in student enrollment. During this time, he also helped Wilberforce University, which was on the verge of closing, receive re-accreditation. Throughout his career, he has worked at 15 institutions across the United States over a period of four decades, during which time he has secured and managed external funds totaling $3.5 million, led several curriculum development initiatives and was responsible for implementation of short-term workforce development training courses for business and industry at Ivy Tech Community College. Furthermore, he introduced the IBM Academic Initiative to Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community and Technical College. At Fairmont State University, several students received confirmed job offers after interviews on Wall Street within the beginning stages of the initiative. Dr. Johnson also led the development of four two-week summer college level physics courses for high school seniors.
Due to his accomplishments, Dr. Johnson was featured in the Wall Street Journal and has been interviewed by several news outlets. He was also named as an Outstanding Administrator at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana and as the Administrator of the Year at Walsh University. He maintains his affiliation with the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center and the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Johnson has attributed his professional success to his commitment in placing students first, and prioritizing their education and future prospects. He has also benefited from many mentors, and remains grounded through his Christian faith.
