He also taught the technique of interventional cardiology and so served as honorary professor of medicine at the Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital University of Medical Sciences, Beijing, (2002), The Institute of Geriatric Cardiology, Central People's Liberation Army Hospital 301, Beijing China, (2005), the First Nanjing University Hospital, Nanjing, China, (2005), Vietnam Heart Institute, Hanoi Vietnam, (2007), and Hanoi Medical University, Hanoi, Vietnam, (2010). He also served as Visiting Professor of Medicine at Trinity School of Medicine, SVG (2009-2010), Nanjing University School of Medicine, Nanjing, China (2010-present), and the Tenth Hospital in Shanghai, China (2014). Having practiced as an exemplary physician for over three decades, Dr. Nguyen recently joined Tan Tao University in Vietnam as the vice provost (2017-2020) and academic dean for the school of medicine (2017-present). Additionally, Dr. Nguyen taught as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (1994-present).
Dr. Thach Nguyen also became active as a writer, editorial consultant and reviewer of the Journal of Geriatric Cardiology, Journal of Interventional Cardiology, and American Journal of Cardiology. In 2021, Dr. Thach Nguyen serves as guest editor for the European Journal of Anatomy, Journal of Geriatric Cardiology and Current Cardiology Reviews. Likewise, Dr. Thach Nguyen published a best-selling interventional cardiology book, including five editions of "Practical Handbook of Advanced Interventional Cardiology" from 2002-2021, by Wiley Blackwell Oxford UK. A Russian language edition was added in 2015. Dr. Thach Nguyen also published a clinical cardiology book "Management of Complex Cardiovascular Problems" with the foreword by Eugene Braunwald, MD, Harvard University, School of Medicine, in 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2016 by Wiley Blackwell. The first edition of this book was translated into Spanish and published in Barcelona, Spain.
As a scientific researcher, Dr Thach Nguyen's most important contributions to medicine and cardiology are the discovery of a new method of reviewing coronary angiogram (15 images per second) which could study in detail the morphology, directions and interactions of the coronary flows. This new technique is described in details in the 5th edition of Practical Handbook of Advanced Interventional Cardiology (1/2021 by Wiley Blackwell, Oxford UK). With this new technique, many new understandings or corrections of previous medical concepts are presented. The first important discovery is that the blood flows well in the coronary arteries during diastole and more slowly in systole. The flow does not stop in systole as current teaching dictates. The second important discovery is that during the change from diastole to systole, there is a collision of antegrade (diastole) and retrograde blood flow (systole). This collision damages the intima and starts the atherosclerotic process. This first ever described event explains why the majority of coronary lesions happen at the mid segment of the right coronary artery or at the end of the proximal segment of the left anterior descending artery. This is a new scientific discovery for the benefits of cardiac patients. Once the cause and mechanism of formation of coronary plaques are discovered, more effective management or preventive measures could be designed and applied. If the patient receives a stent, the collision stops because the stent as a metallic scaffold facilitates the antegrade flow and moves the collision line more downstream. This new angiographic reviewing technique also explains why patients with aortic stenosis or dilated cardiomyopathy have chest pain and sudden death. All of these new discoveries are published in the March issue of the European Journal of Anatomy (published by the Spanish Society of Anatomy) and the Journal of Geriatric Cardiology (April 2021) and Current Cardiology Review (July 2021). Dr. Thach Nguyen also is a frequent organizer and faculty at many international cardiology meetings. He served as President, Chairman of the Scientific Committee or Faculty at the Great Wall International Conference on Cardiology, Beijing, China (1992-2021), Joint Conference on Revascularization, Dong A University Medical Center, Busan, Korea (2010-2021), the China Interventional Therapeutics (CIT) (2005-2020), Northern Coronary Forum (NCF) (2010-2020), Vietnam Heart Association, Bi-annual Scientific meeting (2000-2020), Tam Duc Hospital Cardiology Days (2016-2021), Thang Long Cardiology meeting, Hanoi, Vietnam (2015-2020). Dr. Thach Nguyen was faculty at the scientific meetings of the American College of Cardiology (2016-2018, 2020), of the American Heart Association (2018-2019), and of the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention (SCAI) (2016-2020).
Dr. Nguyen received a Doctor of Medicine from Hue University School in 1978. He subsequently completed an internship and residency in internal medicine (1985), followed by a fellowship in cardiology (1987) at Brooklyn Hospital Center, currently a major teaching hospital affiliated with Mount Sinai Health System, , NY. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Nguyen achieved his board certification in Internal Medicine (1988), Cardiovascular Disease subspeciality (1989) and Interventional Cardiology subspeciality (2002). Recently, he becomes associate alumnus of Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, Boston, MA.
Elected by his peers, Dr. Nguyen is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He is also a fellow of the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention, where he notably co-chaired the international committee (2014-2019) and was member of Board of Trustees (2013-2016). Furthermore, he became a prominent member of the American College of Cardiology, for which he served on the international committee (2006-2007) and the international membership task force (2006). In 2017, Dr. Nguyen received an Award for the Contribution to the Improvement of the Capital City of Hanoi, Vietnam.
