Following a distinguished career in journalism and communications, Ms. Crawford-Mason retired from CC-M Productions Inc., a company she established in Washington, D.C., in 1981. Leveraging her expertise in the field, she began as a reporter and columnist for the Washington Daily News in 1961, and was subsequently hired as a reporter and senior producer for NBC-TV between 1969 and 1980. Among other roles, Ms. Crawford-Mason found success as the founding Washington bureau chief for People magazine from 1974 to 1982.
An award-winning producer, Ms. Crawford-Mason produced the first network documentary on spousal abuse in 1975 on NBC-TV, which won a Blue Ribbon Award at the San Francisco Film Festival. Two years later, she produced the first network documentary on child sex abuse. Other noteworthy works to her credit have included "Windows on Women," "How To Fix Up a Little Old American Town" and, in 1987, "Work Worth Doing," which was a Golden Eagle Award recipient through the Council on International Non-Theatrical Events.
Ms. Crawford-Mason's latest work is titled "Good News: How Hospitals Heal Themselves," which she produced and directed in 1999. Though her career has been suffused with highlights, she is especially proud to have worked as a producer on the 1980 show, "If Japan Can, Why Can't We," which was recognized with a Dupont Award from Columbia University's school of journalism. It introduced management master, W. Edwards Deming, with whom she worked through the 1990s. A talented writer, Ms. Crawford-Mason co-authored her first book, titled by "Quality or Else: The Revolution in World Business" in 1991. She later co-authored two more books: "Thinking About Quality, Progress, Wisdom, and the Deming Revolution" in 1995 and "The Nun and the Bureaucrat: How They Found an Unlikely Cure for America's Sick Hospitals" in 2006.
Raised by a loving and supportive family who taught Ms. Crawford-Mason the value of education, her mother notably served as the chairperson of the Democratic Party in Montgomery County, MD, while her grandmother, Bayard Wootten, was a famous pioneer photographer in North Carolina and early women's member of Who's Who. An exemplary student in high school, Ms. Crawford-Mason began writing for her school paper while attending, ultimately inspiring her to pursue a career in journalism. Accepted to the University of Maryland shortly thereafter, Ms. Crawford-Mason later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in American History in 1958.
Celebrating her success, Ms. Crawford-Mason received over a dozen accolades for her work, beginning in 1966 with a First Prize Award from the Washington Newspaper Guild. She also won two prestigious Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences, an Award for Investigative Reporting from the Chesapeake Press Association, a Documentary Award from the American Women in Radio and Television, an Excellence Award from the Society of Technology Communication and, among others, a Bronze Plaque from the Columbus Institution of Film and Video Festival. To support her incredible career, Mr. Crawford-Mason was active with the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
