Highly ranked as one of the best criminal defense attorneys in Texas, he and his team focus primarily on federal white-collar crime, including health care fraud, bank fraud, mail fraud, securities fraud as well federal and state cases involving complex criminal litigation. Mr. Botsford's considerable expertise has included appearing in both state and federal courts, as well as numerous trials and appeals on behalf of attorneys, doctors, prominent business professionals and everyday individuals. He successfully defended Governor Rick Perry, obtaining dismissal of all charges prior to trial.
Throughout the course of his career, which extends back to 1977, Mr. Botsford served as a briefing attorney for the Honorable Truman Roberts in the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. Mr. Botsford thereafter practiced with Emmett Colvin in Dallas, and subsequently, with former Judge Frank Maloney of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. He has spoken at the State Bar of Texas' Advanced Criminal Law Course every year since 1990 and excelled as a course director for that program in 2005. Among other, roles, he was active as a member of the Pattern Jury Charges committee of the State Bar and served on the Criminal Law Advisory Committee of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization for over twenty years.
As an expert in his field, Mr. Botsford has earned distinction for his scholarly output. He has also been an invited speaker on behalf of several organizations, including the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Educational Institute since 1982 and the State Bar of Texas since 1990. Mr. Botsford's career has been supported through membership with several industry-related organizations. Among them, he has been active with the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (TCDLA) in various capacities, including as a former associate director, director, assistant secretary, secretary, first vice president and president. Other memberships to his credit include the Travis Bar Association, the State Bar Texas and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
An alumnus of the University of Connecticut, Mr. Botsford earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics, cum laude, in 1974. He was then accepted to Southern Methodist University, where he studied in the school of law, became a member of Order of the Coif and received a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1977. Mr. Botsford has been admitted to practice by the Texas Bar Association, the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court Appeals for the Fifth and Ninth Circuits and the U.S. District Court for the Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western Districts of Texas. He is certified in criminal law through the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1983 and in criminal law appellate law through the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 2011.
Mr. Botsford received a Presidential Excellence Award six times between 1989 and 2018, earned the Percy Foreman Lawyer of the Year in 1993 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014 by the TCDLA. He has consistently been named to several legal publications, including the Best Lawyers in America since 1995 for appellate law, non-white-collar criminal defense and white-collar criminal defense, Texas Lawyer as a One of Five Top Notch Go-To Lawyers in Criminal Defense in 2002 and 2012, and as the "Go To Lawyer" in 2007. He has been named as a Super Lawyer by Texas Lawyer every year since 2003.
