A renowned clinical and forensic pathology specialist, Dr. Zipf retired after more than 40 years in the field. His career included the establishment of R.E. Zipf PA Pathology Associates in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and an appointment as chief of pathology and director of clinical and diagnostic laboratories at Nash Health Care Systems between 1978 and 2006. R.E. Zipf pA Pathology Associates provided a variety of consultative services including medical laboratory software, medical forensics, and laboratory management for area hospitals, law enforcement agencies, courts and attorneys.
As a recognized expert, Dr. Zipf served on numerous boards, taught as a clinical assistant professor in the school of medicine at East Carolina University, and was an adjunct professor, as well as the director, in the school of medical technology at Barton College. He also provided his services as a regional forensic pathologist in the state of North Carolina.
During the length of his career, Dr. Zipf was responsible for successfully converting the Durham NC county coroner's system to a medical examiner's system, was recognized for establishing Clintrac Pathology Software and, among other achievements, assisted in the design and installation of some of the earliest laboratory information systems. As a seasoned researcher, he also investigated numerous deaths linked to radiation overdose in Franklin County, Ohio. As a result of his years of study, Dr. Zipf has disseminated much of his findings by authoring articles in various scholarly journals.
Dr. Zipf is active with numerous organizations throughout his community. He has served on the forensic advisory board of the North Carolina Department of Justice, was active on the Mayor's Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse and is a respected member of Kiwanis. With respect to education, he has served on the board of directors of Nash Community College, was a member of the board of trustees of North Carolina Wesleyan College, and has lent his time and expertise as mentor for Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools. Additionally, Dr. Zipf is a longtime advisor of the Zipf Charitable Trust and Fund, which he established in 1999, and has spent many years aligned with the Boy Scouts of America as a former eagle scout.
Dr. Zipf prepared for his career by earning a Bachelor of Arts at DePauw University in 1962 and a Doctor of Medicine at the Ohio State University in 1966. He subsequently completed an internship at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He completed his training in pathology at Duke University Health Systems. In 1971 he was appointed as assistant professor directing the forensic pathology program at Duke. He served as a Major in the U.S. Air Force and as a chief of anatomic pathology and as a consultant to the USAF Surgeon General from 1972 to 1974. From 1974 to 1978 he was a pathologist at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and the forensic pathologist for the Franklin County, Ohio Coroners Office. Eminently qualified, Dr. Zipf has multiple board certifications in pathology.
Supported through membership with several industry related organizations, Dr. Zipf is a past president of the Nash County Medical Society. He is also a fellow of the College of American Pathologists, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and he American Society for Clinical Pathology. Other memberships to his credit include the Association of Clinical Scientists, the American College of Nuclear Medicine and the North Carolina Medical Society.
