Ms. Truckenbrod is a renowned digital artist and professor emeritus who taught in the art and technology department at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC), a private university associated with the Art Institute of Chicago, for more than 25 years. A pioneer in her field, she notably created one of the first courses in computer graphics; Creative Computer Imaging. Prior to her tenure at the SAIC, Ms. Truckenbrod served as an assistant professor at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb from 1973 to 1981.
Besides her full-time teaching appointments, Ms. Truckenbrod often lectured at national and international conferences as a visiting artist throughout the country and abroad in such places as Helsinki, Finland, London and the Netherlands. She also hosted various seminars in her area of expertise and was a presenter in her field. Ms. Truckenbrod's recent work includes exploring various environmental issues by use of fiber arts and video sculpture installations.
Among her innumerable achievements as an artist, Ms. Truckenbrod was the first to have her artwork displayed on the internet in Chicago. Her work has also been featured on the cover of Surface Design Journal and was the subject of an article by Polly Ullrich, an independent art critic from Chicago. Ms. Ullrich also wrote an article about her artwork in Sculpture magazine. Ms. Truckenbrod's artwork was also featured on the cover of European Textile Forum with an accompanying article. Furthermore, TELOS published "JOAN TRUCKENBROD," a book about Ms. Truckenbrod's incredible textile artworks in the portfolio series.
Appearing in various shows throughout Chicago, Ms. Truckenbrod's amazing pieces have also been exhibited internationally in Berlin, London and Paris. Her artwork is in the digital art collection at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Illinois State Museum and, among other locations, the Art Institute of Chicago. She has been fortunate to also have her work shown in various private collections, as well as in several digital art books, including. "Digital Visions: Computers and Art" by author Cynthia Goodman, "The Computer in the Visual Arts" by author Anne Morgan Spalter and "Drawing: Space, Form and Expression" by author Wayne Enstice. Her artwork is also featured in "New Media Futures: The Rise of Women in the Digital Arts" by authors Donna Cox, Ellen Sandor and Janine Fron.
Ms. Truckenbrod published the book titled "Creative Computer Imaging" in 1988 with Prentice Hall, and "The Paradoxical Object: Video Film Sculpture" in 2013 with Black Dog Publisher in London. She has also published a number of articles about digital art.
Driven to contribute on behalf of her community, Ms. Truckenbrod created a nonprofit professional art gallery in Corvallis, Oregon, called the Truckenbrod Gallery. In addition to exhibiting her own artwork, she also features a host of other professional artists. Supported by several industry-related organizations, Ms. Truckenbrod is a member of the International Society for Art, Science, and Technology, International Sculpture Center, the College Art Association and the Textile Society of America.
Ms. Truckenbrod received a Bachelor of Arts at Beloit College in 1967. Continuing her studies, she received a Master of Arts at Northern Illinois University in 1973 and a Master of Fine Arts at the SAIC in 1979. In 1975 Ms, Truckenbrod began exploring the potential of using a computer for creative expression. She created a series of coded algorithmic line drawings using a mainframe computer. She subsequently began creating fiber textiles with heat transfer color prints that were ironed onto fabric by hand.
Awarded a Scandinavian-American Foundation Fellowship in Denmark, Ms. Truckenbrod also received a Fulbright Fellowship and a fellowship at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California, and a project grant from the Illinois Arts Council. Recognized for her designs, she received a Surface Design Award for "Emerge", which was a fiber installation, in 2003. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Truckenbrod was cited in the 19th edition of Who's Who of American Women.
