With over 30 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Coffey is currently retired, having spent the last decade of his career as a technical staff member at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois from 1988 to 1998. During this time, he also served the laboratory as the deputy director of the Superconductivity Pilot Center from 1989 to 1990 and as the deputy manager of the Advanced Technologies Group from 1992 to 1998. Earlier in his career, Dr. Coffey cultivated his skills through roles with Sub Sea Systems, Biomagnetic Technologies Inc., American Magnetics Inc., SRI International and the Westinghouse S&T Center.

A regular contributor of articles to professional journals, Dr. Coffey's work has appeared in such publications as The Physical Review, Reviews of Modern Physics, the Journal of Applied Physics, Reviews of Modern Physics, Cryogenics, and Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. He has also provided content to a number of technical reports and books in his industry. Notably, he was a member of the Maglev Technical Advisory committee for the United States Senate in 1989, and later was a member of the government Maglev System Assessment team (1991-1993). Dr. Coffey was co-chair of the 13thInternational Maglev Conference and corporate secretary of the Applied Superconductivity Conference.

Dr. Coffey first earned a Bachelor of Arts in physics from King University in Bristol, TN, in 1956 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1964. Involved in the early U.S. research on magnetic levitation for transportation, he led the design, construction and evaluation of a maglev test sled using superconducting magnets. Holding four patents in his field, Dr. Coffey coined the term "maglev."
