Serving in this role until 1999, he was subsequently promoted to the director of eukaryotic research. In 2005, Dr. McReynolds advanced to become the head of the division of RNA biology, and served as a senior research scientist. In 2018, he was named as an emeritus scientist and has since served as a research fellow. New England Biolabs is world famous for providing enzymes used in molecular biology. They have a very extensive internal research program in nucleic acid enzymology and parasitology.
Active in academia, Dr. McReynolds is a former assistant professor of biochemistry at the University of Arizona. He also held the prestigious title of an honorary professor at Hunan Medical University in Changsha, China, during 1998. He has served as a mentor to over 20 postgraduate scientists. Other noteworthy roles to his credit have included serving as a steering committee member of the sciences group on filariasis and as a grant reviewer for TDR Fillariasis at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, and on the special review committee of the Tropical Medical Research Centers for the National Institutes of Health. Dr. McReynolds has maintained his involvement as member of the board of associates at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, a nonprofit research institute, since 2002.
A seasoned researcher, Dr. McReynolds was proud to be involved in the early stages of gene discovery. While collaborating with the WHO, he also had the opportunity to develop tests and vaccine studies for two parasitic diseases. He has developed novel methods for detection of micro RNAs Dr. McReynolds has authored over 80 scientific papers as a result of his years of study, including publications in the journals, Science, Nature and Cell, served on the editorial board of Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology from 1990 to 2003 and served as a reviewer for the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and the International Collaborations in Infectious Disease Research. Moreover, he currently holds eight national and international patents.
Interested in the sciences while coming of age, Mr. McReynolds received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, with honors, at Oregon State University in 1968. While an undergraduate at Oregon State University he was elected Science Senator and founded the Mary's Peak Marathon. He was a member of the Pacific Coast champion Oregon State light weight crew in 1965. He later attained a Doctor of Philosophy in cell biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1974. His thesis advisor was Sheldon Penman. He received post-doctoral training in Houston at Baylor College of Medicine with Bert O'Malley and at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England with George Brownlee. Affiliated with several industry-related organizations in support of his career, Dr. McReynolds is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the New York Academy of Sciences and the American Heartworm Society. He is also an active member of Phi Lambda Upsilon.
Well regarded for his myriad contributions to the field, Dr. McReynolds has been an invited speaker to multiple national and international meetings. In addition to securing several grants from the National Institutes of Health between 1979 and 1987, he likewise received similar bestowments from the World Health Organization and the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation.
