David William Voorhees, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished listee, Dr. Voorhees celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Since 2014, Dr. Voorhees has been the director and founder of the Jacob Leisler Institute for the Study of Early New York History in Hudson, New York. An independent non-profit organization, the Institute's one-of-a-kind research and study center is Dr. Voorhees' crowning professional achievement. The Institute is the outgrowth of The Papers of Jacob Leisler Project, a National Historical Publications and Records Commission endorsed project, of which he has been editorial director since 1988. Since 1990, he has been managing editor of de Halve Maen, a quarterly journal devoted to New Netherland studies published by the Holland Society of New York. In Hudson, NY, Dr. Voorhees has been a member of the city's Historic Preservation Commission, a member of and advisor to the board of directors for Historic Hudson, and has served on the board of directors for the Friends of the First Presbyterian Church of Hudson, the Hudson Parks Conservancy, and the Hudson Waterfront Advisory Steering Committee. He is an active elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A).

Earlier in his career Dr. Voorhees was a co-editor of the Papers of William Livingston from 1983 to 1988 and previously the reference history managing editor of Charles Scribner's Sons in Manhattan from 1976 to 1983, managing such works as the Dictionary of American Biography (1976-1981), the Encyclopedia of American Foreign Policy (1978), and the Encyclopedia of American Economic History (1980). He has taught graduate interns at New York University, chaired a scholars' roundtable at Harvard University, and contributes as an established scholar to the New Netherland Institute in Albany, New York.

Dr. Voorhees was a New York State Council of the Humanities Speaker in 1996-1998 and was named a Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Fellow in 1999. He has served on the New Amsterdam History Center's advisory committee, and is currently on the board of advisors of Historic Huguenot Street, New Paltz, NY. Dr. Voorhees is an Honorary Member of the Huguenot Society of America and is affiliated with the American Historical Association, the Association of Documentary Editors, the New-York Historical Society, the Columbia County Historical Society, and the Holland Society of New York, of which he served as a trustee from 1980 to 2006 before being designated as a trustee emeritus in 2007. He was elected a member of the New York Academy of History in 2007.

Writing extensively throughout his career on the colonial period, Dr. Voorhees has authored and edited numerous books, dictionaries, and other works. Presenting frequently at professional conferences, he compiled the Concise Dictionary of American History (1983), wrote the Centennial History of the Holland Society of New York (1985), and translated and edited two volumes of the Records of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Flatbush, Kings County, New York (1998, 2009). He was a member of the editorial board of Columbia County History & Heritage from 2002 to 2009. A native of Princeton, New Jersey, Dr. Voorhees studied at Newberry College, Newberry, South Carolina, at Columbia University, where he was a research assistant with the Bureau of Applied Social Research, and at New York University, from which he earned a bachelor's degree in 1974, a master's degree in 1977, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1988.

Honored with numerous awards throughout his career, Dr. Voorhees was presented with the Bayrd Still Prize for Best Dissertation in History, 1988-1989, the New York State Historical Association Manuscript Award, 1990, and the New Netherland Institute's Hendricks Manuscript Award, 1990. He was the Huguenot Society of America Medalist, 1993, accepted a Residency Award from the New York State Library in 1995, a Gold Medal to a Member for Distinguished Achievement from the Holland Society of New York in 1995, the Alice P. Kenney Award from Friends of New Netherland in 1998, and the Clague and Carol Van Slyke Article Prize in 2014. HRH Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands made him a Knight in the Order of Oranje-Nassau, Kingdom of the Netherlands, in 2010. He has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
