Selina Yvette Ellis Gets the Star Treatment!

Ms. Ellis, an adult daycare expert, provides clients with a place to go have fun, interact with others, and feel loved. Initially, she started out as a certified nursing aide, providing services to client, but decided to transition to home health care in 2011, which allowed her to send certified nursing aides to assist clients directly. She found adult daycare to be the perfect fusion of the two, allowing people to receive at-home care while also providing them with interpersonal experiences. Ms. Ellis' day care is largely focused on providing for families with elderly members, who are left alone as the younger generations have school and work to focus on. Ms. Ellis focuses on making sure that these individuals are cared for and loved, and that none feel the loneliness and sense of being forgotten that too many elderly people feel in a modern world.

The daycare assists clients with changing medications, as well as various other health care services. "Everybody will benefit from adult daycare services," including some younger guests. "We take anyone, 18 and up," she beamed, anyone who is looking for a good time and some socializing, even a friendly game of bingo. Ms. Ellis' goal for the facility is for it to serve as another home for the clients. "I love what I do," said Ms. Ellis simply. "I always had that passion to help others, and I love to see smiles on people's faces. This line of work is one of the most hands-on, interactive lines of work you can have."

Though work is fun for Ms. Ellis, the job is not without its difficulties. Giving care to clients limited to rural areas remains a challenge, but she has resolved to expand operations to reach as many of these people as possible. It is the heartbreaking challenge of simply not being able to help enough people. Nevertheless, Ms. Ellis continues to make it her mission to help as many people as she can reach, and strive to reach those that she currently cannot.

In terms of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has presented challenges to virtually every industry, unfortunately the adult day care industry has also seen its share of difficulties and complications. With older individuals, many are more at risk of exposure to the virus, which has limited attendance and discouraged families from visiting the facility. Despite this, certain clients still needed to use the facility and, applying CDC guidelines, Ms. Ellis is happy to report that she was able to serve the clients in need without any issues.

Ms. Ellis' face lit up as Star asked her about balancing the challenges of being a business owner with being a health care provider. She replied that she is extremely proud of her staff, all of whom work hand in hand to make sure that the building remains open, and that guidelines and regulations are being followed properly to keep clients safe and happy. "The most important part of a role like this, in caring for another person, is just that. That feeling is the most rewarding feeling you can give someone."
