As an academician, Dr. Brodie is presently distinguished as Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Research Professor at New York University in the Grossman School of Medicine, a position he has held since 2014. He has been associated with the NYU School of Medicine since 1972 when he began his training in medicine and graduated with an MD in 1975. He completed his residency training in psychiatry NYU Bellevue Hospital Medical Center in 1978 as Chief Resident and honored as a Laughlin Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists. He was then appointed as assistant professor of psychiatry and rose to full professor in 1987. He was selected to be the inaugural Marvin Stern Professor of Psychiatry in 2000. During the period 2005-6, he served as the interim Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry. For more than a decade, he served as the Co-chairman of the Advisory Committee to the General Clinical Research Center of the NYU School of Medicine. He also served five years on the School of Medicine Promotion and Tenure committee and for 15 years as the New York University Director of the Brookhaven National Laboratory/ New York University pioneering collaborative brain imaging program that used positron emission tomography (PET) to image the chemistry of the living brain in people with psychiatric and neurologic conditions. He has served on many NIH committees that review research grant applications and as well as the recipient of numerous federal and other grants himself.
Dr. Brodie originally trained in chemistry at the University of Wisconsin (Madison) which he attended as a Ford Foundation Scholar from 1953-1957 he went on to get his PhD in physiological chemistry (1962) with a minor in organic chemistry from the same institution before becoming an NIH postdoctoral fellow at Scripts Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla. His PhD thesis was on the initial biochemical stages of cholesterol biosynthesis and his postdoctoral training was in vitamin B12 chemistry and biochemistry. He then became an assistant and associate professor of biochemistry (with tenure) at SUNY at Buffalo before becoming a visiting professor of inorganic chemistry at Queens College, Oxford in the summer of 1972 before going on to medical school. As a researcher, Dr. Brodie as published more than 130 articles in peer reviewed scientific journals on subjects that range from biosynthetic pathways in cholesterol biosynthesis to the mechanism of vitamin B12 dependent enzymes, from determining metabolic characteristic and neuro imaging signals of schizophrenia to brain imaging studies of addiction in animals as well as being the Principal Investigator of a human clinical trial that employed a novel approach to the treatment of severe cocaine addiction. He holds 12 US patents related to his research.
As a clinician, he is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychology and Neurology (1978) as well as being a former Board Examiner and has extensive clinical experience in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy and adult psychiatry. Successfully working with patients for decades he has specialized treating individuals with mood and anxiety disorders. For more than twenty years, Dr. Brodie has been consistently recognized as one of Castle and Connolly's top doctors for the New York metro area. He was elected as Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists and as a Fellow of the APA and is a member of various professional organizations. Along with his many other recognitions, he received the Solomon Berson Distinguished Alumni Award for his contributions to medical science from the NYU School of Medicine in 2008, and he was named a Laughlin Fellow to the American College of Psychiatrist when he was a resident. Dr. Brodie's expertise in neuroimaging has been frequently been expressed in a forensic setting where he has served as an expert witness in a number of high profile federal and state cases where imaging data was considered to be intrinsic to the behaviors. He has also written several scholarly articles and lectured widely emphasizing the limitations of neuroimaging in forensics.
