Ms. Kaplan celebrates retirement after more than 25 years as a classroom teacher and reading specialist for the San Diego Unified School District. Driven by a lifelong passion for children and reading, she was inspired to pursue a career in education. Ms. Kaplan attended the University of California Berkeley and completed a Master of Arts in education at San Diego State University in 1980 before becoming certified as a reading specialist.
Ms. Kaplan began her educational career in 1962 with the San Diego Unified School District. She would continue to intermittently teach until her retirement in 2009. She taught fourth grade, first grade, and kindergarten-level classrooms before transitioning into reading and specialized language support. Later in her career, Ms. Kaplan taught English as a second language to elementary school students and adults in the community and conducted a middle school-level reading lab for students with reading disabilities.
Ms. Kaplan considers her time teaching kindergarten to be the highlight of her career as she was most able to shape her students' reading skills and attitude toward learning. She emphasizes that teachers do not just teach facts and subjects, but values as well, and that some of students' most important lessons are the ones that are implied. Outside the classroom, Ms. Kaplan has spent many years as a board member at her temple and vice president of education for the United Jewish Fund of San Diego. She also volunteered at San Diego State University supporting adults with low literacy. Now retired, she enjoys reading, knitting, and playing duplicate bridge.
