Harboring an innate desire to study exercise and the human body, Dr. Whidden earned a Bachelor of Science in exercise science from the University at Buffalo in 2001. She furthered her education, obtaining a Master of Science in applied physiology from the University at Buffalo in 2003. Dr. Whidden earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Florida in Exercise Physiology in 2008 and worked as a graduate research assistant while working on her degree. Lastly, she completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in Gainesville, Florida before moving to PA.
Backed by her extensive academic and professional resume, Dr. Whidden currently excels as an associate professor at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, for which she has taught a wide range of subjects including lifetime fitness concepts, introduction to exercise physiology, muscle physiology and applied cardiovascular physiology. As an educator, she is responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate classes, conducting research alongside her students and serving as the exercise science coordinator for the undergraduate program in the Department of Kinesiology. Alongside other scholars in the field, Dr. Whidden has co-written publications such as "Effect of High-salt Diet on Age-related High Blood Pressure and Hypothalamic Redox Signaling," "Age Impaired Endothelium-dependent Vasodilation is Improved by Reservatrol in Rat Mesenteric Arteries" and "The Effect of Nasal Irrigation on Total Exercise Time, Heart Rate and Blood Lactate During Graded Exercise in Healthy Individuals."
An exercise enthusiast in her own right, Dr. Whidden contributes to those in need during her spare time as a member of the Mid-Atlantic Regional chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine, the chairperson of the Student Success Committee for the College of Health Sciences at WCU and a member of the University Advising Committee at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. For her professional excellence, she was presented with a Faculty Advising Award and an Excellence in Teaching Award, both of which she was nominated for by her students. In the coming years, Dr. Whidden intends to apply for a professorial role and publish more of her research in the areas of ergogenic aids for improved exercise performance, high intensity interval training, muscle physiology and oxidative stress associated with aging and muscle atrophy.
