NEWTON, MA, April 05, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Ellen Linda Bassuk with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Bassuk celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A highly acclaimed psychiatrist, nonprofit executive and educator, Dr. Bassuk's esteemed career has been 50 years in the making. Presently, she devotes her time to serving those less fortunate, especially homeless people, as the owner and founder of C4 Innovations (C4). Established in 2006, the organization focuses on improving person-centered, trauma-informed care, supporting recovery, stable housing and racial equity, while helping individuals to attain health and wellness. Dr. Bassuk and her talented team of experts are devoted to serving some of the most marginalized individuals throughout the country in an effort to create lasting social change.
Dr. Bassuk's interest in the nonprofit sector began while she was working as a hospital-based academic psychiatrist at one of the Harvard hospitals, during a time when institutionalization was very popular. While overseeing the psychiatric emergency room, she observed an influx of numerous homeless people, simply because they had nowhere else to go. Dr. Bassuk also began to realize just how many children were affected by homelessness and how many homeless men and women were suffering from substance use disorders and mental health issues.
In 1986, Dr. Bassuk became active as a member of the committee on health care of homeless persons at the Institute of Medicine in Washington, D.C., a position she held for two years. She also founded the National Center on Family Homelessness in Newton Centre as its president in 1988, serving homeless children and their families with the hopes of ending family homelessness in America. Since that time, Dr. Bassuk's goal has been to combine services with housing and focus her efforts on garnering as much support for children as possible. As an extension of her work, she also established the Bassuk Center in 2012 as its president, where she continues her groundbreaking work serving the local community and surrounding organizations.
During her tenured career in mental health, Dr. Bassuk was notably the director of psychiatric emergency services at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston between 1974 and 1982. She also taught courses in psychiatry at Harvard University in Boston from 1983 to 2020, and conducted multiple research studies, particularly the Worcester Family Research Project. Dr. Bassuk has contributed her expertise by writing more than 150 books, monographs and articles for several renowned professional journals. She was also the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts at Brandeis University in 1964, Dr. Bassuk completed a Doctor of Medicine at Tufts University in 1968. Additional educational pursuits to her credit include an internship at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and residencies in psychiatry at University Hospital in Boston, Boston State Hospital, and Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Dr. Bassuk also completed a fellowship at the Bunting Institute in Cambridge. She is board certified in psychiatry and neurology. She was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School from 1983 to 2019.
Elected as a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Bassuk has also remained aware of developments in her field as a member of the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society. Recently honored by the Riverdale Country Day School in New York in 2018, she was humbled to receive a Humanitarian Award. Likewise, in 1993, Dr. Bassuk was awarded with an honorary doctorate in political science from Northeastern University. In 2010, she received an Advocacy Award from the American Psychiatric Association and the Blanche F. Ittleson Award for Promotion of Children's Mental Health from the American Association of Orthopsychiatry.
