A talented teacher and artist who specializes in hunting decoys and folk art, Dr. Peterson found success as a professor of art at Kearney State College in Nebraska for more than 30 years. After beginning his career at North Platte College from 1958 to 1966, he subsequently excelled in the art and history departments at Kearney State College until his retirement in 2000. Moreover, Dr. Peterson wrote the art curriculum for kindergarten through sixth grade students on behalf of the state of Nebraska in addition to often consulting and judging art shows throughout the Midwest.
Initially earning a Bachelor of Arts in art and English at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1958, Dr. Peterson obtained a master's degree at the University of Northern Colorado in 1962 and a Doctor of Education with an emphasis in visual arts at the University of Kansas in 1975. As an artist, he became renowned for his acrylic paintings, many of which were inspired by the landscape in his home state of Nebraska. Since 1961, Dr. Peterson's works have been exhibited frequently in one-man shows and traveling exhibitions throughout Nebraska and Kansas while also having been featured in public and private collections.
Involved in numerous activities throughout his community, Dr. Peterson was one of the founders of the Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA) in 1976. Now recognized as a board member emeritus, he was notably recognized with an award from the Kearney Area Community Foundation for the founding of the MONA in 2010. He also founded the annual summer event known as Art in the Park in Kearney, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2021. Honored with a Governor's Arts Award in 1981, Dr. Peterson continues to serve as the director of the aforementioned event.
Additionally, Dr. Peterson is active as a member of the Kearney Chamber of Commerce and as an advisor for Elks Lodge. Furthermore, he has been affiliated with the National Education Association, the Nebraska State Education Association, the National Art Education Association and the Kearney State College Education Association. Appointed as the director of the Nebraska Art Collection, Dr. Peterson formerly flourished as the president of the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs and the Nebraska Art Teachers Association, an advisor of the National Art Association, the vice president of the Nebraska Arts Council and a member of the board of directors and the president of the Kearney Artists Guild.
Dr. Peterson's hard work and dedication over the years has been celebrated with myriad accolades, including the Roscoe Shields Service Award from the Nebraska Art Teachers Association. He was also presented with the Pratt-Heins Award for Outstanding Faculty Service and a Faculty Senate Distinguished Service Award from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Peterson has been featured in the 20th edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.
