Since 2001, Dr. McBride has served as the Arthur G. Hansen Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Purdue University, for which he has taught and researched as a member of faculty since 1973. Naturally curious and with a lifelong philosophical bent, Dr. McBride earned a Bachelor of Arts at Georgetown University in 1959 and immediately pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Lille, where he spent the next year. On returning to the United States, Dr. McBride continued his study at Yale University, earning a Master of Arts in 1962 and his Doctor of Philosophy in 1964.
Dr. McBride began his career as an instructor of philosophy at Yale University after completing his doctoral studies, rising to become an assistant professor in 1966 and an associate professor in 1970. He briefly served as a visiting lecturer at Northwestern University in summer 1972, and left Yale University the following year to join Purdue as an associate professor. An expert in social and political philosophy, Dr. McBride was made a full professor at Purdue University in 1976, and taught at the Korcula Summer School in Yugoslavia during the 1970s.
In addition to extensive contributions to peer-reviewed publications, Dr. McBride has written and edited more than a dozen seminal works on social theory and 20th century Eastern European political philosophy, most recently "Social and Political Philosophy," "The Idea of Values" and "From Yugoslav Praxis to Global Pathos." Likewise, he is a past president of the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés de Philosophie, a member of the bureau of the International Council on Philosophy and Human Sciences, and has held leadership roles in numerous other organizations throughout his career, including the North American Society for Social Philosophy, the American Society for Philosophy in the French Language and the Sartre Society of North America. In recognition of Dr. McBride's contributions to the field on an international level, he has been awarded with a Silver Medal by the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences and is a Decorated Chevalier of the Ordre Des Palmes Academiques.
