An expert in environmental history and philosophy and the history of science, she served as chairperson of the Division of Science and Society in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management and of the Conservation and Resource Studies Department. Dr. Merchant also previously achieved success at the University of San Francisco, advancing from assistant to associate professor in the Natural Sciences Interdisciplinary Department.
Noted as a Fulbright scholar in Sweden in 1984, Dr. Merchant was a member of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton in 2012 and a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University in 1978 and 2017. Recognized as a visiting scholar at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia, she was also active as a visiting professor at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris and a Fulbright fellow at Umea University in Sweden. Earlier in her career, she was affiliated with Oregon State University, served as a faculty member at the University of San Francisco, and was a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. A prolific lecturer and consultant in her field, Dr. Merchant has served as a keynote speaker for the Margaret Cavendish Society in 2017.
Dr. Merchant has authored, edited, and co-edited numerous books, including The Death of Nature: Women, Ecology and the Scientific Revolution, now in its 3rd edition, and Ecological Revolutions: Nature, Gender, and Science in New England. Publishing peer-reviewed papers in the history of physics, she has participated on the advisor board for the International Journal of Ecoforestry. Her most recent books include Spare the Birds: George Bird Grinnell and the First Audubon Society (2016) and The Anthropocene and the Humanities: From Climate Change to a New Age of Sustainability (2020), both published by Yale University Press.
Dr. Merchant initially earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry at Vassar College in 1958. She concluded her academic efforts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, obtaining a Master of Arts in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy in the history of science in 1967. Dr. Merchant was also presented with honorary doctorates from Umea University in Sweden in 1995 and the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2018.
A respected member of several academic organizations, Dr. Merchant is affiliated with the Society of Women Geographers and the American Society for Environmental History, for which she was appointed as the past president. The former vice president of the American Society for Environmental History, she was recognized as a fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. Accepting a Distinguished Service Award from the American Society for Environmental History in 2017 and an Award from the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton University in 2012, Dr. Merchant has been honored in the 50th and 56th through 58th editions of Who's Who in America, the third edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the 18th edition of Who's Who in the World.
