Dr. Shatz has earned distinction as a professor and the chair of the electrical engineering program first at Suffolk University and then at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology (BFIT). Knowledgeable in a range of engineering subjects, she teaches courses including Circuit Theory, Electromagnetic Theory and Engineering Statistics, and has published research on topics in the fields of numerical methods, biomechanics, power engineering, and engineering education. A talented mathematics student hailing from a challenged, low-income background, Dr. Shatz initially became interested in engineering as a way to secure a middle-class future.
After graduating from an Orthodox all-female high school in New York, Dr. Shatz was drawn to engineering for its potential to improve society, and she began her studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. By 1996, she had earned a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering from MIT, and in addition to Suffolk and BFIT, she has taught at Tufts and Northeastern University. A Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Dr. Shatz was honored with a 2017 Outstanding Engineer Award from the IEEE Power and Energy Society's Boston Chapter.
Dr. Shatz attributes her success to the strong support she has enjoyed from her husband Michael, and from her colleagues throughout the course of her academic journey. She hopes to win a National Science Foundation grant that funds scholarships for low-income, under-represented students, to continue her research in power engineering, and to continue her work in the community advocating for stable housing prices and access for all. Dr. Shatz is the proud parent to four children, and one grandchild, and was the sister of Jack Schostack, a truly unique individual who was born in 1964 with a large brain tumor, and who loved, and was loved by his family and caregivers. She and her family appeared on the early 2000s Fox reality show "Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy."
