Having had the good fortune to work extensively in the field of astronomy, Dr. Kirk enjoyed a five decade-long career with several aerospace defense, global defense and manufacturing organizations through the states of California, Maryland and Ohio. Widely considered an expert in aircraft navigation, much of his work has been devoted to satellite orbital management. Since 2015, Dr. Kirk has operated independently as a consultant in his field.
Among Dr. Kirk's noteworthy appointments in the field, he served as a staff member for Houghton Associates, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Illgen Simulation Technologies Inc. and Geodynamics Corporation. He also held various positions with the General Dynamics Corporation and Computer Sciences Corporation. Likewise, Dr. Kirk initially found success as a junior astronomer at the Kitt Peak National Observatory, an astronomical observatory located in the Arizona-Sonoran Desert, between 1966 and 1969.
Initially, Dr. Kirk planned to major in physics while pursuing a Bachelor of Arts at Amherst College in Massachusetts. However, during his junior year, he greatly enjoyed a course in astronomy and soon changed the focus of his study. After acquiring his undergraduate degree in 1960, Dr. Kirk continued his academic efforts at the University of Michigan, from which he attained a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962 and 1966, respectively.
Dr. Kirk's career has been supported through his membership with several pertinent organizations. Among them, he is active with the American Astronomical Society, the American Geophysical Union, and the Institute of Navigation. He is also a member of Sigma Xi. Well regarded for his indelible contributions to the field, Dr. Kirk received a Technology Innovation Award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1981.
