Brink with inclusion in Who's Who in the World. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Brooklyn College, Dr. Brink graduated from the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He then remained at LAC-USC for his pediatric internship and residency followed by an extra year as Chief Resident in Pediatrics. While in training, he drew inspiration to enter the field of pediatric endocrinology from his mentors, Dr. Douglas Frasier and Dr. Robert Penny, Dr. Emily Kahlstrom and Dr. Eithne MacLaughlin and his Pediatric Chief, Dr Paul Wehrle. Dr Brink then completed a pediatric endocrinology fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital, followed by a diabetes fellowship at the Joslin Clinic while serving as a Clinical Instructor in Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. He then served as the first Senior Staff Pediatrician at the Joslin Clinic and helped grow the Youth Division into a multidisciplinary team focusing on clinical research, education, interdisciplinary physician - nurse educator – dietician - social worker – psychologist care as well as family support, camping programs and post-graduate education.
Dr. Brink then opened up a private consultation practice at the New England Diabetes and Endocrinology Center (NEDEC) first in Chestnut Hill, MA and then in Waltham, MA where he continued his work with the American Diabetes Association as the Massachusetts Chapter President, member of the Board of Directors and chaired the Massachusetts Program Committee, Youth Committee as well as Family Program Coordinator. During this time Dr Brink also served on the National ADA levels as a member of the National Board of Directors, the National Chairperson of the Council of Diabetes and Youth and a member of the Annual Meeting Conference committee. In addition he participated in numerous committees of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society (LWPES) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).
After joining the premier international diabetes youth organization, ISGD, the International Study Group for Diabetes in Children and Adolescents, he served on the Advisory Board then was elected ISGD's Secretary-General and in his second term as Secretary-General participated in the change from ISGD to ISPAD, International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes, with the creation of the ISPAD's Declaration of Kos. Locally he joined the clinical faculty of Tufts University School of Medicine as an associate clinical professor of pediatrics and continued his national and international teaching efforts as ISPAD's International Education Chairperson following 2 a two year term as ISPAD's President and then 3 more years on ISPAD's Executive Committee as Past-President. Dr Brink has helped develop e-learning programs with the Global Pediatric and Endocrinology consortium while continuing to participate in many editions and revisions of ISPAD's Child and Adolescent Diabetes Guidelines. At present, he serves as ISPAD's medical historian and prepared a 100 year anniversary of insulin presentation for its members in 2021.
As an accomplished medical professional, Dr. Brink was honored to be named an Honorary Citizen of Timisoara, Romania where he also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timisoara, Romania. With colleagues in Romania, he continues to co-edit an annual Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Year Book and co-organize the past 27 years of such congresses there. He also has been presented with an honors diploma from Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria in gratitude for several years of his teaching efforts there as well. Dr Brink has received the highly respected ISPAD Lestradet Education Award for Education and Advocacy from the International Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD), the Grand Prize from the Romanian Society of Diabetes and Metabolism, the Ann Wolfe Award from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Lilly Partnership in Diabetes Award and the National Youth Service Award from the American Diabetes Association.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Brink has been most proud of his work in international education and also as a co-investigator with the DCCT: Diabetes Control and Complications Trial first at the Joslin Clinic and then transferring to the Massachusetts General Hospital until the end of the DCCT. He's participated in numerous research projects over the years involving psychological (self-efficacy) and educational approaches (motivational interviewing and different learning styles) to diabetes and a family-centered multidisciplinary approach to such care. In addition, he has helped with studies on new insulin analogues, blood ketone testing, blood glucose testing, insulin pump utilization as well as diabetes-associated complications and co-morbidities. As a respected voice in his field, he has contributed numerous articles in addition to his many lectures on endocrine conditions as well as diabetes around the world. Dr. Brink has written or edited three textbooks about pediatric and adolescent diabetes and his latest work with ISPA, Changing Diabetes in Children has been written in English and translated into French, Spanish, Khmer and Hindi for use around the world.
More recent work has focused on assistance for accomplishing these same goals in low resource and middle resource countries round the world working with ISPAD, Life for a Child (LFAC) and Changing Diabetes in Children (CDIC) to write open-access training manuals and bring local programs to not only interest but also to help educate health care workers on these same issues.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Brink plans to continue his work as an international educator with most recent visits to Cambodia, Macao, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Uganda and India.
