After more than three decades as a special education teacher, consultant and principal in the Prince George's Public School district in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Ms. Vanden Heuvel became a family therapist and senior counselor at Bowie Youth and Family Services in Bowie, Maryland, in 1989. Over the next 25 years, she provided superb therapeutic service to her clients. She also spent 10 years supervising graduate students that were studying family therapy at the University of Maryland. Furthermore, Ms. Vanden Heuvel contributed her services privately on behalf of the Pro Bono Counseling Project until 2014.
Ms. Vanden Heuvel's decision to transition from education to health care was based on her years of experiences in working with students. Realizing how significant the parents and guardians are in the development and well-being of their children, she felt compelled to better serve them as a therapist. During the course of her career, Ms. Vanden Heuvel notably developed a program for working with children with attention deficit disorder and their parents. She also authored her first book, "Paddling Stories."
A devoted advocate on behalf of her community, Ms. Vanden Heuvel has been affiliated as a member of the Climate Stewards of Greater Annapolis. A grassroots organization, it seeks to educate citizens on the threats of climate change. Ms. Vanden Heuvel has also been active as a trip leader and instructor for Washington Women Outdoors in Gaithersburg, Maryland, since 1979, and excelled as the executive committee chairperson and trip leader for the Sierra Club in Annapolis, Maryland, since 1984.
Ms. Vanden Heuvel studied at the University of Maryland, where she attained both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in 1962 and 1990, respectively. In between those degrees, she also received a Master of Arts at George Washington University in 1970. Eminently qualified in her field, Ms. Vanden Heuvel was a licensed family therapist in Maryland and was a certified canoe instructor through the American Red Cross.
Supporting her mental health career, Ms. Vanden Heuvel was a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. In 1999, she was named as an Outstanding Alumni by the family studies department at the University of Maryland. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Vanden Heuvel has been cited in the 22nd and 23rd editions of Who's Who of American Women.
