Every successful person has a painful story. Dr. Century has a similar life story. Despite many constraints and challenges, he transformed his life from a village boy to an acclaimed physician because of his positive attitude, a clear purpose and perseverance. Since his early childhood he had a dream to become a doctor. He never questioned his ability, worried about resources or was intimidated by circumstances. His accomplishment is an example of resilience and perseverance.
Dr. Century was born in Katheri, a rural village in Nepal, as the sixth child of Lal Badahur Bishwakarma and Thuli Kanchhi Bishwakarma. There was no electricity, running water, road access to the village or even an elementary school. His eldest brother had to go out of town for schooling and his sisters could not even do that. His father, who never received a formal education and had seen the struggles of his children, became a local activist and started a campaign to build a school in the village, where Dr. Century completed his elementary school. Soon after, his family left the village for his further schooling in a nearby town. It was a fortune to attend a school much less a good school where children could dream of becoming accomplished professionals. Besides the lack of physical resources in school, social circumstances were even bigger challenges at that time as Dr. Century represents a socially marginalized caste group. Hence his dream of becoming a doctor was amusing to many around him.
During his early school years, his mother suffered with an illness for almost two years, Dr. Century's motivation to pursue a career as a doctor become even more profound. Overcoming numerous obstacles, including the unprecedented nature of his academic efforts in his family, he was additionally driven by his desire to inspire the youth in his community akin to how his father had inspired him. Eventually relocating to the United States to conclude his post graduate trainings and seek future professional opportunities, Dr. Century is proud to have laid the foundation for his family's success, having now fostered nearly ten doctors within his extended family. He became the first doctor in his family, hometown and possibility the most highly trained physician from a marginalized community in Nepal.
Dr. Century earned a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Nepal in 2004. He subsequently completed an Internal Medicine residency at Nassau University Medical Center in New York in 2009. Beginning his career as a hospitalist for Parkview Medical Center from 2009 to 2013, Dr. Century refined his skills as a research associate with National Jewish Health between 2013 and 2014.
Having diagnosed and treated his father's lung disease during his residency, Dr. Century focused his fellowship on Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, advancing to the post of chief fellow at the University of Texas Medical Branch from 2016 to 2017. In addition to this accomplishment, he became licensed by the Boards of Medicine in Colorado, Texas and Virginia. Likewise, Dr. Century earned his certification in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Century has been affiliated with numerous organizations including the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
Since 2017, Dr. Century has excelled as an attending Pulmonary and Critical Care physician with Winchester Medical Center in Virginia. Dr. Century's passion for his profession is reflected by his outstanding patient care and scholarly activities. He has authored book chapters, abstracts and research publications.
As a testament to his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Century has accrued several accolades throughout his career. Honored as first in his class at the B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, he was recognized by the University of Texas Medical Branch as an Outstanding Fellow in 2017. Furthermore, Dr. Century was celebrated on various occasions in his medical school, residency and fellowship for scholarly activities.
Beyond his primary professional responsibilities, he has strong desire to engage in the social justice movement. He has been actively participating in community activities in Nepal. He has been on the Board of America Nepal Medical Foundation.
