Since 1988, Dr. Beall has worked with the University of California Forest Products Laboratory in Richmond, California, celebrating more than 20 years as a professor and the director of the laboratory. Well regarded for his excellence in the field, he was bestowed with the title of a professor emeritus in 2008, and remains active as the director of the lab, through which he continues a career-defining passion for the science and engineering study of wood as a structural material and manufacturing component. Dr. Beall began his career as a student at The Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1964. He continued his studies at Syracuse University, from which he received a Master of Science in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1968 while working as a research technologist in the United States Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin.
Dr. Beall accepted an assistant professor position at Pennsylvania State University in 1968, where he rose to become an associate professor in 1975. He spent the next two years as an associate professor at the University of Toronto before returning to the United States to join the Weyerhaeuser Co. as a scientist and manager between 1977 and 1988, when he began his work as professor and director with the University of California Forest Products Laboratory. Since 1997, Dr. Beall held the UC Berkeley Fred E. Dickinson Chair in Wood Science and Technology in addition to his courses and administrative work, and he has contributed extensively to journals and papers on wood science.
In a career suffused with highlights, Dr. Beall is particularly proud to have patented numerous novel wood forming methods, as well as processes for measuring the content of dielectric materials, pultrusion methods for condensation resin injection, hybrid pultruded materials and dozens of others. He is also the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for his work, including a Gold Medal and Achievement Awards from the Acoustic Emissions Working Group, Distinguished Service, as well as Outstanding Service Awards from the International Academy of Wood Science, honors from the Society of Wood Science and Technology and the Forest Products Society, and an Appreciation Award on behalf of the American Society of Testing Materials. Dr. Beall is a fellow of the Acoustic Emissions Working Group, a past president of both the Forest Products Society and the Society for Wood Science and Technology, and an active member of several other industry committees. In his leisure time, he enjoys reading, woodworking and spending time with his wife, Mavis, three children, and six grandchildren.
