After a 30-year career in the armed forces, Mr Helton retired as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force in 1985. Throughout the course of military duty, he was deployed to the Philippines in the midst of the Vietnam War, where he courageously flew combat support missions into an active war zones. An outstanding leader whose tenacity never went unnoticed, he successfully ascended in grade, selected for major in his 6th year, which was three years ahead of schedule. While in the Air Force, Mr Helton served eight years as a military policeman and five years as a command post controller, as well as 15 years in human resources. After separating from the service, he spent nearly 25 years as a Texas Real Estate Broker.
Raised in the Buckhorn Orphanage in southeast Kentucky since the age of three, Mr Helton joined the military after high school to pursue his education. While active in the service, he studied at the University of the Philippines before acquiring a Bachelor of Science in personnel management and industrial relations at the American International College in 1969, graduating third in a class of over 500 students. He then attended the Officer Training School, graduating a Distinguished Graduate and received a commission as a second lieutenant after 15 years enlisted service. Thereafter he attended the Air Force Personnel School where he graduated the "Outstanding Honor Graduate".
Subsequently, Mr Helton completed a Master of Science in personnel management and industrial relations at the Eisenberg School of Business, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Ma. in 1976. An excellent student, Mr Helton maintained a 4.0 grade point average in all graduate courses. He was named to to the National Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma. He was also designated a "Distinguished Graduate." by the Air Force Institute of Technology.

Mr. Helton was named to the Order of Kentucky Colonels in 1992. This is the highest title of honor granted by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In recognition of his years of service, Mr. Helton was decorated with a Bronze Star, an Air Medal for combat support missions during the Vietnam War, five Meritorious Service Medals, an Air Force Commendation Medal and an Expeditionary Medal.
