Marquis Who's Who Honors Jia Zhao, Esq. with Inclusion in Who's Who in the World

Ms. Zhao was the first People's Republic of China national to receive a Doctor of Jurisprudence in the United States.

CHICAGO, IL, April 23, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to honor Jia Zhao, Esq. with inclusion in Who's Who in the World. An accomplished listee, Jia Zhao celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Ms. Zhao was assigned to the Chinese Foreign Ministry to work as a U.S. desk officer. Having taught English in the countryside during China's Cultural Revolution, she was transferred to the Chinese Foreign Ministry a month before President Richard Nixon's consequential visit to China in 1972. She had worked with the ministry for eight years and decided to seize the opportunity to study law in the United States in order to gain a better understanding of the American legal system. In her career, Ms. Zhao has worked tirelessly to achieve her mission of bridging the gap between the two countries. She received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Harvard University, becoming the first People's Republic of China national to do so. She is licensed to practice law in Illinois and the District of Columbia.

After receiving her law degree, Ms. Zhao began working as a senior associate at Baker & McKenzie LLP, where she worked for more than 30 years before retiring as the senior counsel in 2019. Previously, during her service in the Chinese Foreign Ministry, she participated in work that led to the improvement of U.S.-Chinese relations. She also served as President Nixon's interpreter during his post-Watergate visits to China in 1975, 1976 and 1979. As an accomplished law professional, Ms. Zhao organized and led one of the first China practice groups in the U.S., along with an American partner. The practice group contributed to the understanding, cooperation and development of investment and trade between the U.S. and China after years of separation.

A devoted civic advocate, Ms. Zhao has been active with the Lurie Children's Hospital and Foundation. She also maintains her affiliation with the American Bar Foundation, the District of Columbia Bar, the Chicago Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. Looking toward the future, Ms. Zhao hopes to continue improving relations between the U.S. and China.
