A former dean and now professor emerita in the School of Travel Industry Management at the University of Hawaii (UH) at Manoa, Dr. Liu celebrates more than 40 years in academia. Promoted from assistant to associate professor, she then served as full professor from 1989 until her retirement in 2014. Dr. Liu was notably the first female to serve as a full professor in travel industry management and the College of Business at UH. During her tenure, she was also an interim dean and director for the Center for Tourism Policy Studies and interim associate dean and assistant to the senior vice chancellor and executive vice president.
Conducting extensive tourism economic impact studies, Dr. Liu's groundbreaking research focused on Western Canada, Turkey and the American-affiliated Pacific Islands. She also led numerous primary data surveys and, with the Pacific Business Center Program (PBCP), completed an ecotourism development plan for the American Samoa government and a book, "Pacific Islands Ecotourism: A Public Policy and Planning Guide" in 1994, which was the recipient of a PBCP National Award. Dr. Liu's other scholarly efforts included a second book, "Ecotourism Development Plan for American Samoa" in 2005, as well as articles in professional journals on tourism economic impacts, resident attitudes, attractiveness, forecasting and other topics. Her article "Resident Attitudes towards Tourism in Hawaii" was the 14th most cited in the top three tourism journals for a 12-year period.
Dr. Liu is a past president of the Western Regional Science Association and a fellow of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism. The academy consists of the top 75 tourism scholars from across the world. She is a former board member of the Pacific Asia Travel Association and the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, and a former board member and chairman of the education and research committees of the Hawaii Visitors Bureau. She is a member of several honor societies and is a charter member of the Women's Faculty Caucus, where she has mentored and advocated for the advancement of female and minority faculty at UH.
An alumnus of the University of Southern California, Dr. Liu received a Bachelor of Arts with honors in mathematics with a minor in German, magna cum laude, in 1969. She soon after acquired a Master of Arts in regional science from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy in economic geography from Simon Fraser University in 1979.
In 2013, one year before Dr. Liu retired, the School of Travel Industry Management was selected as a top 20 tourism education program in the nation by www.TheBestSchools.org. She was awarded with a Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching by UH, the university's highest teaching award, in 1993. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Liu has been featured in the 25th edition of Who's Who in the West.
