Dr. Schmall is a gerontology specialist and executive director of Aging Concerns in West Linn, Oregon. Supporting clients through her business since 1994, she is a well-respected expert in her field, through which she is also a consultant. In this latter capacity, Dr. Schmall has conferred her expertise with the Be EPIC Dementia Program at Western University in Ontario, Canada, since 2019. Likewise, she is a trainer for older adult sensitivity through Pfizer in New York City.
Previously, Dr. Schmall spent many years in academia at Oregon State University, beginning as a teaching assistant and field supervisor in 1971. Over the years, she enjoyed leading roles as the director of the gerontology program, gerontology specialist in the OSU Extension Service, and as a full professor. Dr. Schmall also had the opportunity to coordinate a senior series project on campus in the Rural Development Center during her tenure, which was very exciting.
Through her leadership, Dr. Schmall has developed an array of training programs and educational materials, including a six-week program for family caregivers called "Powerful Tools for Caregivers." Now in 40 states, Canada and abroad in South Korea, the program has been translated into Spanish, Chinese and Korean. Dr. Schmall has also been responsible for designing a multitude of multimedia workshop packages, videos, CD-ROMS, nationally distributed teaching/training educational manuals and educational games that focus on such topics as family decision making, various caregiving and health related issues and changes, mental health, memory and sexuality in later life.
Dr. Schmall notably produced seven successful multi-media educational programs called "When Dependency Increases," which was later recognized with an AARP and two other national awards in 1992. Well regarded for her expertise, she has presented over 1,600 workshops for professional staff members, older adults, and their families all over the U.S. and abroad in Canada, Guam, and Thailand. In 1997, Dr. Schmall authored her first book, "Home Sweet Home: How to Help Older Adults Live Independently," which is now in its fourth edition. She authored "The Caregiver Helpbook: Powerful Tools for Caregiving" in 2000. Her expertise also included contributing over 150 articles in scholarly journals, as well as several book chapters and bulletins on age-related issues and concerns.
Involved in a plethora of worthy causes that support the community, Dr. Schmall has been active on the Caregiver Resources Committee in the Portland-Metro area since 2018, the board of directors for Ride Connection since 2014 and Age Friendly Innovators (now called Rebuilding Together Rogue Valley) since 2013. She is also an AARP Oregon Ambassador for Caregiving. Professionally, Dr. Schmall is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America. She is also a member of the American College of Health Care Administrators and the Oregon Gerontological Association and has been a trainer for the American Society on Aging and the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging Retirement Housing Managers certification program.
Dr. Schmall initially studied at Montana State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1970. Following this accomplishment, she received a Doctor of Philosophy at Oregon State University in 1977. Her subsequent achievements earned her a LEAP Award from the JFR Foundation in 2014. Among other recognitions, Dr. Schmall was bestowed with the Ebi Bassi Outstanding Contribution Award from the Institute on Aging's Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention in 2005, a National Alliance on Caregiving Award in 2007, a Distinguished Alumni Award from Montana State University's College of Education and Human Development in 2006 and the Gloria Cavanaugh Award from the American Society on Aging in 2002.
